Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters
Discussion
As a big dumb fun monster movie, it's good. I had more issues with the military and planes stuff than the monsters A giant flying wing plane with Ospreys in the bomb bay as dropships, riiiigght!. If you haven't seen it, stay to the end, there's an end credits scene The end credits headlines were setting up Godzilla v Kong, is the end scene bringing a form of Ghidorah into it too, or setting up Godzilla 3 (man-made Mecha-Ghidora?!??) ?
I watched it yesterday, utter drivel.
The story was nonsense and the acting was awful, but the thing that infuriated me most was the way it was way it was shot, I honestly don’t need the camera to be up Godzilla’s nose the whole time...these are supposed to be massive monsters, pan back so I can actually see what’s happening!

this is my concern ^^^^ I watched (and disliked!) the first one so I'm going to swerve this (though perversely I quite enjoyed the stupi Matthew Broderick one!)The story was nonsense and the acting was awful, but the thing that infuriated me most was the way it was way it was shot, I honestly don’t need the camera to be up Godzilla’s nose the whole time...these are supposed to be massive monsters, pan back so I can actually see what’s happening!

Saw it last night and thought it was pretty good fun in a brain out popcorn type way. It was still a bit too dark and murky and also agree with another poster that said it was a bit too close up. For some reason a lot of big monster\robot type films do this, the Transformers films have the same issue. I'm not sure if it's easier to CGI close in shots but it is a bit annoying. The Pacific Rim films are a better example of how to do this kind of thing on film, at least you can see what's going on in those movies.
Still despite that there is still some fun to be had watching the monsters go at it, the climatic battle being the standout and the film is at it's best during those moments. Again as with a lot of these types of films the human bits just get in the way, I know the oft repeated thing is that the human characters allow us to relate to the film but this is rubbish for me, the monsters are far more interesting.

Someone bought me the Blu ray for Christmas
I can only second some of the comments above, for the most part the human characters just get in the way.
One decent scene with the Japanese character and the bomb with them, which shows perhaps how you could better integrate them into the story if it wasn't the standard estranged American family setup. Other than that they were mostly an annoying waste of space.
The plot that was supposed to tie it all together was laughingly preposterous as well. The only thing worth watching were the monster battles and these were better than the first Godzilla movie.

I watched the previous Godzilla with my nephew again the other day. Whilst it certainly has its problems, it reminded me just what a good looking film it is. The HALO jump in particular is a beautiful looking scene, and his initial reveal where the flares barely reach his knee and he doesn't even notice he's being shot at is great.

It has some decent shots but it fails at the first hurdle of being a Godzilla movie in that Godzilla was barely in it.This had more annoying human characters, and a more nonsensical plot, but at least you get Godzilla for a significant proportion of the screen time.
I don't know why they seem to fail so badly at this. Surely there is at least one decent screen writer in Hollywood to enable them to have a coherent plot that makes sense and to have interesting human characters in the part of the film that doesn't consist of skyscraper sized monsters duking it out.
A strange film with too many ideas going on. Bit austin powers as the villains seem to have spent trillions to build various facilities in secret to make the odd 5 million or so.
That early 90s one was proper but apparently the monster has to look like a bloke in a suit stomping around or they go mental in japan
so we have this new stuff.
