Longestest shutter speed is 30s in regular shooting. If I put into bulb mode I have read that you can go into the menu and set the timer.

She towards bottom of this page

However, when I enter the menu, there is no bulb timer option - can anyone advise please?

Thanks

Look at the dial on the top of the camera and select 'B' which is next to C3, C2 and C1, the shutter will stay open as long as you hold the shutter button down, though of course if you want to avoid camera shake you will need to invest in a remote control.

I think he already understands what bulb mode is, but rather than sitting with his finger pressing the shutter release (or holding a remote release) and counting to 300 seconds or whatever, some cameras enable you to set a timer in the menu, so you don't have to carry a separate timer for long exposures (and have some form of light to be able to see said timer).

It would appear that the Canon 5D mk4 has such a function, as do several other "less advanced" models from Canon, but AFAIK, sadly the Canon 5D mark 3 doesn't have such a setting as supplied by Canon.

One solution would be to install Magic Lantern custom firmware on the camera. This is pretty easy to do (I've done it for video), and it's easy to remove again if you want to.

Although originally developed to enhance video - enabling video to be shot in RAW, there are a host of features for still photography such as auto expose to the right, motion detection, in camera intervalometer, and in relation to the original question, there's a Custom bulb timer for extra-long exposures.
