I seem to remember Branson 'courting' him a few months back when he was a guest on the show... something along the lines of ''lets do it again Chris, you know you want to''.... great use of license payers money!

So why could he not even make a success of Top Gear?

And Virgin Radio, I don't know why anyone would listen to Commercial Radio if they didn't have to. Have turned off EddIe Mair already. Five minutes of conversation and 5 minutes of adverts.

I think he would have done with more time.

Knee jerk reaction.

I hope Evans finds a way to continue his awesome charity work with the cars etc.

It would have to be him - as nobody else would have the passion the way he does.
Good point. His work with Children in Need every year brings in an awful lot of money.
He did say that this would continue and he would at ways to give me to Children in Need.

Branson was on his show a couple of months and asked him to join him then, I am sure it was tongue in cheek, but maybe that was the start?

Leaving to join a competitor yet being allowed to stay on air until Christmas and no doubt using the time to promote his new show at Virgin? Come on BBC, wake up!
In any commercial organisation he would be off the premises by now, probably escorted by security staff.

How on earth someone earlier could suggest Vanessa Feltz I really don't know - and as for Jonathan Ross...........two of my most disliked 'DJs' ever. Utterly appalling.

The best quality is Simon Mayo but they won't pick him - and I'm sure he wouldn't want to do it anyway.

I am sure some kind of deal was put in place, otherwise he would not be staying and mention his new show

why is he doing it- the challenge I guess.

His replacement will be on the minimum they can get away with paying!

I'm no fool but I would be a ste top gear presenter. Evans knows the radio business inside out.

I agree in principle but have you listened to Elaine Paige recently? There comes a point when adverts are the lesser of two evils.

ETA - or Clare Teal. fking awful.

I seem to remember that Branson sold Virgin Radio to some kid with Ginger hair and glasses, who thought he could change the world.

It’s now owned by Murdoch (News Corp) - perhaps another good reason not to switch?

I wish Evans well.

Tbh, the show was getting rather tired and needed a refresh.

Not easy getting up at 4am. (Yes I know Nurses, bus drivers etc do It for a fraction of what he earns)

Although there is nothing I particularly like about Evans, his peppiness, in the mornings, tends to fade the banality of the forthcoming day and he does play some good music, especially on a Friday morning. I actually like the way he slots non-playlist stuff in, even if he is annoying.

As to replacements, I doubt Mayo would want something so necessarily frothy (although to get away from Whiley Coyote, maybe....) but I hope it's not Sara Cox or Zoe Ball, both of whom get turned off, whenever they stand in. Trevor Nelson is OK but hardly the A Team. Shame Graham Norton wouldn't be up for it...

They really need to avoid people like Alan Carr and other annoying turds of his ilk.

I certainly won't be following Evans, I don't think I can even get Virgin round here but there is a high risk I will be turning R2 off, altogether and going back to CDs....yes, I still use CDs. there is something about most female DJs that I just can't listen to... rabbit, rabbit, rabbit, rabbit.... get enough of that PC jibber jabber elsewhere.

He did say that he'd be continuing with Carfest, and continuing to donate profits to CiN, but did also add "and other charities". I wonder whether it will affect the popularity of the event if he doesn't have the 9m listeners to promote it to?

On my commute Virgin doesn’t pick up sadly.

In fact it’s only jsckFM or heart of the commercial channels.

If it’s Zoe then that’s exactly what happened back in the 1990’s when he quit Zoe for years then cox the. Moyles

In fact here is very much equality of gender on the radio and has been for decades Olin the key shows.

On Radio 1 yes? I was looking at this earlier - if Wikipedia is correct Mark and Lard did a stint between Evans and Ball, which I have no recollection of. We can dream...

What's with all the Virgin Radio is his spiritual home? His old Virgin Radio is now Absolute Radio.

I've been listening to Virgin on and off the last few months. I noticed recently that their sound quality has improved. They still don't have text displaying the artist and song like the other DAB channels. Hopefully they get that sorted out.

It doesn't come across as a top quality radio station. I'm surprised they have pulled Evans.

So glad he’s going-can’t stand all the klaxons and jingles of his kid
I hope Sarah cox gets the job-much more civilised and plays more music....
I used to really like Christian O’Connell on virgin-I guess his replacements haven’t been very successful....

Thinking about the way this has been done I'm suspecting as his contract was drawing to an end the BBC intentionally offered him a take-it-or-leave-it renewal on less money (a lot less) and he's decided to walk thus saving them the hassle of a public fallout. Evans wiped millions off the value of a certain BBC franchise that was worth a lot more to them than any salary he was on, and while his show has commanded a significant audience (mainly because of the BBC competing with itself and haemorrhaging listeners from Radio 1) he's been a mixed blessing for them.

Evans going back to Virgin is like Fernando Alonso going back to McLaren - returning to a brand he ceremoniously crapped on previously who under new management are welcoming him back on a large pay-packet because of his status, but to an operation that will never fulfil his ambitions and ego.

My thoughts too. With the proviso that ‘Glasto’ Whiley isn’t allowed to continue at Drivetime.
