Enjoyed that. It's obviously tightly controlled in terms of what he was allowed to see and film, but Palin is very experienced at this sort of thing and can still ask some probing questions and give some great insights.

That teacher looked terrified when he started throwing that inflatable globe to the kids. Didn’t really learn anything new from other docs but I’d agree that Michael Palin does this kind of thing so well. Really enjoyed it.

I suspect a lot of western brands are just waiting for the two Koreas to be unified and then within few years all North Koreans will be capitalist wes like the rest of us. rofl

Excellent programme. I really enjoyed it too.

Palin does a fantastic job. I very surprised it wasn't a BBC programme. Looking forward to the next episode.

Enjoyed this too, Noticed that the party in the park was all very jolly and relaxed until the old guy put a garland on his head. The look of fear on his family's faces as they pulled him away was very telling.

I noticed that too.
Interesting insight to North Korea - a place I'd never want to visit.

I really enjoyed it. It does seem in stark contrast to the Vice documentary on north Korea shot in 2006 - has there been change in the country or did they roll out better staged scenes for the film crews benefit?

My favorite Michael Palin quote :- "treat men with rubber stamps or guns, with equal respect"

It was very poor IMO, Palin's naivety was bordering on offensive, he seemed to be utterly clueless about what was going on around him most of the time. I can picture him doing this programme in Nazi Germany, commenting with his usual affable whimsy on how pretty the flags were and that the people seem to be enjoying themselves.

I found it quite interesting but obviously they were kept on a tight rein about what they could and couldn't see in the country. Next week's when he goes out into the countryside away from Pyongyang looks to be interesting given the reports of the food shortages in that country.

I like the uneasiness of it all. It feels like it could go wrong at any moment.

Some genuinely surprising moments though, I'm looking forward to next weeks episode.

One of the most noticeable things was the lack of smart phones. You do anything or travel any where everyone is clued to a smart phone.
Agreed about the family looking terrified when the old guy put the wreath on his head, i wonder if the have been used as target practice yet.

Just watched it online having fully intended to watch it last night and then forgot! Same thoughts as everyone else really. One thing that fascinated me was the surreal ambient music playing across the city early in the morning ... like the whole place was some massive weird art installation using sound. Very haunting and utterly mesmerising. I'd love to go there just to experience that!

A big point, and one I missed.

Very interesting!

it felt so staged, as soon as cameras left it becomes bleak, I bet.
