I was transfixed by the female traffic control cops in the blue uniforms, big caps, tight knee length skirts, and white socks, marching around like the guards at Buck House.
I’d have learned the Korean for, “What time d’you finish, fancy a drink?” and wandered back and forth across the road they controlled.
There’s an international incident, right there.

interesting to watch a lot of staging for sure. It great to see him back doing this stuff. You could sense they were being followed closely and listened to constantly. Loved the traffic Police they are the tiniest people I have ever seen in a uniform

Loved it last night , he is a national treasure, but nothing can better his, round the world in eighty days,
The roads of their capital city just deserted ,
they dont have much sense of humour either, if that was the prosperous part ,look fwd to to the outback bits.

The most noticeable thing was the lack of traffic. That's a capital city in the middle of the day.
They weren't Under Armour logos imo, some similar looking Korean knock offs.

It mentioned the rumour that apparently Kim Jong Un personally selects his traffic trolley dollies. Which usually means he's launched his nuclear warhead at them before there allowed to direct the one car on the road.

I know someone went to North Korea through a Chinese travel agent a few years ago. He'd been to all the oddball countries such as Cuba, Russia , Iran , Saudi Arabia , Belarus but he said North Korea was the most bizarre he'd ever travelled too.

It was very poor IMO, Palin's naivety was bordering on offensive, he seemed to be utterly clueless about what was going on around him most of the time. I can picture him doing this programme in Nazi Germany, commenting with his usual affable whimsy on how pretty the flags were and that the people seem to be enjoying themselves.
Quite the opposite of what I was thinking. You know only too well that Palin is no idiot and is well versed in the realities of life (as we in the west see them). He also mentioned at the beginning that he was being very tightly watched and 'controlled' all the time he was there. I thought he got round this very well by putting some serious things over in his usual jokey way.

A few young ones had phones in the park party scenes but seeing as Facebook is banned they have no need to be glued to them 24/7 wink

Was it just me who thought the females were all very cute ?

Could explain the erratic robotic movements. Vaginal itching can be a really uncomfortable

Just watched the repeat as I only caught the end of the first episode last time.

One thing I noticed was folk in the background quite regularly altering course away from the cameras. I don’t know whether to put that down to just not wanting to be filmed or something more along the lines of not wanting to be seen by the authorities.

There was Palin, his camera man, possibly a sound man,the 2 guides and 5 security officers so I'd imagine they took up quite a large area

I'm going in 3 weeks.

Having watched Michael Palin there, I've got a weird mixture of excitement and apprehension.

Those traffic girls are highly respected from what I’ve read, and only allowed to do it for a few years while they are good looking.
There are loads of videos of them on YouTube

Petrol stations are good too

I agree, Balmoral seems to have been left out in the sun too long IMHO

Palin was circumspect and knew when to reign it in, I imagine he doesn't want to be responsible for his two "minders"* and/or their families getting the DPKR equivalent of the gulag.

He also is highly intelligent, as this breadth of work displays, as such does't need to force the issue. I recently read Fahrenheit 451 again, this program reminded me immensely of it.

On the guy who laid the leaf wreath on Palin's getting huckled, i don't think that was anything more sinister than a drunk uncle at a party getting told he was making a of himself.

*I highly doubt those are the real minders, although the fella appeared to be a crackshot, I did notice some crew cut muscular folk in the background, who looked more out of place than DS trying to blend in at a rave. Joji Fukunaga could cast them.

That said Palin looks as if he's going to push he boat out a little in the next episode.

Similar to Gaddafi's sexy bodyguards, tuned out well for him.

NK is just like an eastern block country before the ussr downfall, i can't imagine a more repugnant place to visit. It really does put its majority on the cosh, exports slave labour, mass starvation etc.

In a way the film perpetuates the myth by not being overly critical.

A few documentaries on youtube, this one isn't bad.

That's exactly it.

The idea (the majority) of these people are brainwashed automatons is preposterous. We have saw this time and time again with totalitarian regimes; people will spout any old st, quite convincingly, out of self preservation.

I spotted smart phones, despite what the commentary said, more of the NK population are self-aware than some seem to think.

I don't think lopping the head off the snake, Kim, is a good idea, power vacuums seldom turn out well. I regard Trump as an imbecile, yet strangely his reach out may be the best scenario here, for the population of NK.

Who knows, but another family were sharing food with him with no apparent concern.

Very interesting programme, I love Palin's stuff. Visited Albania a few years back, very similar in some respects.
