The Walking Dead Expanded Universe (SPOILERS)
Discussion
There are just too many bit-part characters in the Walking Dead right now, that you just can't invest your time in liking any of them. Trying to tick too many disability/sexuality/religion boxes too. Too many locations too (Hilltop, Alexandria, Sanctuary, Oceanside, Kingdom... ). It's become confusing with the different timelines too.
Kang has done a much better job than Gimple but in my view, they need to really strip the show back and have a handful of key characters and at most 2 locations. Keep it simple although it is probably way too late to truly save the show any more.

They certainly need to do something, it's obvious from the lack of posts on this thread that people are losing interest. It used to be that the Walking Dead thread would have 2 new pages of posts after each episode in a day or two. You (and now me) are the only two to post after last nights episode. They do have a lot of locations, but this season I don't think we've seen anything of Oceanside and last week (may have been the week before) we've seen that Sanctuary is now deserted.Kang has done a much better job than Gimple but in my view, they need to really strip the show back and have a handful of key characters and at most 2 locations. I'm not actually sure where the show is trying to go now, there doesn't seem to be a plan that the characters are aiming to achieve. Plus the whole helicopter thing, which has now been teased a lot, but to absolutely no end that can be seen.

AFAIK that's going to be a series of spin-off movies, but it does seem a bit crap (sadly to be expected with TWD of late...) if that's all we see of them in the main show after being teased so much like you say.I didn't mind last nights episode, much better than last weeks but I'm still a bit unsure of the direction the show as a whole is taking.
Does anyone offer an explanation for the apparent total lack of firearms? Did all the bullets get used up in season 8? It just seems bizarre that there were *that* many weapons between Rick's gang and the saviours, plus the ability to fabricate ammo, and yet now everyone must resort to using makeshift bows and arrows.

I guess that now they're so used to the Zombie threat that they know how to deal with them, then they can save bullets
for when they really need them, with a big human group.
They did tell the whisperers that they had more than enough fire power to deal with them. So you may be right. for when they really need them, with a big human group.
However, you'd still take some with you, just in case. It'd be foolish not to.
Last night's episode felt like nothing happened.
Wow, it does speak volumes that this is the first post since the show aired on Monday! How many are still watching it? It used to be one of the busiest threads on the forum in past seasons.
Anyway, another slow burner, but setting up for a rather massive confrontation. Plus Alpha really is full on psycho, a rather gruesome way to end a potential usurper.
Why is it that people are so willing to follow an absolute nutter? I wonder if that would really be the case if the real world did become apocalyptic?

Last 2 have been poor they need to up the pace and bring it to an end.
Saw the latest (from Monday) episode last night and really enjoyed it. Beta, the 2 i/c of the Whisperers, looks particularly threatening and is now going to have a massive grudge against Daryl, and the Whisperers in general will have a huge grudge against all our collective heroes.
The new group, the Highwaymen, look like they could be a good addition and I got the impression that Tara recognised their leader? Or maybe it was just the shock of a new group suddenly showing up in the nick of time and helping.
Either way, I think this season has been pretty good and is setting the series up for some good action.

Yeah, I really enjoyed Monday's episode. The Whisperers give me that creepy feeling from back in season 1, 2 and 3 again. I do hope they kill Michonne off, she just annoys me!The new group, the Highwaymen, look like they could be a good addition and I got the impression that Tara recognised their leader? I now wath more out of habit rather than enjoyment of the series, and usually pay more concentartion to reading my phone than watching. This episode was better but I have obviously missed some things...
What happened to Maggie?
Where have all the guns gone? Did they run out of ammo shooting inanimate buildings a while back? I thought the guy with the mullet could make ammo?
I knew Opie was tough but how did he survive that fall??

I thought the latest episode was excellent. It felt like the sort of thing they usually drag out over 2 episodes, in past seasons we would've had one episode about the whisperers part of the story and another for the highwaymen.
I think you've hit the nail on the head, here. I was surprised at how much happened in one ep! Hopefully this means they will start bumping more and more people off and become a bit more ruthless like the good old days.jesusbuiltmycar said:

Maggie has actually been written out, although it's not surprising most people didn't notice. IRL the Actor who plays her wanted more money as she was on around $50k an episode, compared to say $300-$500k an episode of someone in a comparable role in a comparable series not made by AMC, their MO with TWD since Frank Darabont was sacked right as the start has been to make it on a shoestring, it's why it's lasted so long in the face of falling viewing figures. Lauren Cohan was contracted, like Andrew Lincoln for the first half of this series, they hoped she would sign for the second half and beyond so didn't kill off her character, then things got a bit Brexity and she went the full 'No Deal' and left.
In the story, Maggie left her camp at some point during the 6 year time hop between half-series, she's gone to start a new camp with a bit part character from last year - she's done TWD equivalent of moving to Manchester in Corrie and may return next series.
As for the guns, they're far more scarce now, which in fairness they were prior to the endless A-Team style shootouts last series. The bullet factory is no more, I can't remember why, it seems for the first 20 or so series they were trying to go back to the ways things were pre-zoms, but now they're accepting that can't happen and they're only about as advanced as humans were during the Medieval era, hand tools, bows and horses. I don't think there's been much of an on-screen explanation of where the guns have gone, or why they don't use them as much, other than the up to the most recent timehop a relatively short amount of time had passed and it was still fairly easy to scavenge vehicles, fuel, ammo etc, now it seems almost everything in the area they move in is either gone to waste or been taken.
