It’s ok if you don’t mind all the utter tosh-
For instance when wrangles Diesel engines catch fire ,they repair them and they conk out-“they’re flooded-reduce the fuel pressure and don’t use any choke”-they’re fking diesels-they don’t flood and they don’t have a choke.what a load of bks
The original film is one of my favourite films ever-this is terrible as far as I’m concerned.surely they could have still made it exciting and realistic?

Fun fact, the New York scenes were filmed in Liverpool and the Maine beach scenes were crosby beach.

That explains the Fordson 10hp van in episode 2.

I noticed in a trailer that we can expect Sunderland flying boats which seem way off course. They attack a U-boat off the coast of the US, maybe they're from the RCAF but did they use Sunderlands? Also they drop torpedoes - a new one on me.

Torpedoes looks unlikely but the location is possible for air attack if they were going to Maine. Looks like the RCAF had Hudson, Catalina and later liberators for east coast anti submarine warfare.

They did fly Sunderlands but from N Ireland.

I take the view that its a story, its made up and I try not to let those sort of things irritate me.

They have advisors on this sort of thing and the details are checked, however scenes get rewritten on the hoof and they don't pass the Sauron like eye of the advisors, or PH detailfiends.

I agree, it’s entertainment not a documentary. It captures life in a uboat and covers other aspects of the war. I really enjoyed it, it’s not as gritty (or realistic) as the movie, but doesn’t try to be.

Completely agree, though there are some people who take things to extremes, but if it's their thing then so be it.

Off topic I used to play a WW2 submarine sim. Player was skipper U boat, as the war progressed you got sent out on various patrols from Wilhelmshaven and then following the fall of France were reassigned to an Atlantic port, later on the Med. It was more of a sim than an arcade game, and you could turn off targeting and plotting aids to increase realism.

There was a community which modified the game all in the interest of increasing realism, both in terms of the reality of driving the boat and difficulty of finding targets, navigation, torpedo aiming and so on. There were some players who took it to the extreme of playing their missions in real time, taking a couple of weeks off work, no speeding up the clock to reduce transit times, no washing or showers, probably doused their chips in diesel rather than vinegar, littlenext to no sleep etc. Completely mad.

When watching the full length film, you need to have the heating on full, the lights off and you aren't allowed to eat, drink or go to the toilet. Smear yourself in engine grease for added effect. Every 5 minutes you must scream "ALARM!!!!".

Watched it as a 5 hour TV series in 1984 so I could have a bath every week between episodes.

p.s. never seen the film, I assume it's the same as the TV series?

They shot 6 hours of film. The Directors cut is 3.5hours. The mini series is 4.8hours and the theatrical release is 2.5hours (basically no character development, just U-boat action).

The Directors cut was released 18 years later and it is worth getting the remastered Blu Ray version.

But yes, same story.

I've just got one more of S2 to watch. It's...ermmm..... a bit far fetched, but I am enjoying it on the whole. The subs seem to look a lot more "CGI" as the series has gone on.

IMHO

Original 9/10 (The long version, not the cut downs)
Season 1 TV 6/10
Season 2 TV 5/10

No pun intended... too many sub plots in the TV series.
