Oh yes, they weren’t there to spread the word of the lord! And certainly they were probably described as “loveable rogues”, “cheeky chappies” or “devoted dads” or some other ste. But....... the discussion is, when is it right to pull that trigger????

1) as they are walking up the drive?
2) as they are breaking in?
3) when they are inside?
4) in the back as they are running away?
5) seeing them the next day in the street?

Personally I’m happy with two of those scenarios. Pull the trigger. And I’m sure some people here will even go as far as all 5 and understandably so, but does that make it the right thing to do?
any, and i use this term loosely, normal person would i think say 2,3,4.

one point to make is he had birdshot loaded (i seem to recall) that will obviously kill a human in the right circumstances, but is in itself not set out to be fatal at reasonable range to large bodied animals is it?

the quandary many shooters/farmers have is when out if they were to come upon a ABC in close proximity, shooting at it would likely just p*ss it off and make it more likely to attack you, but then im not a cat behaviorist so not sure if that's accurate!

edit to add 4, if they have just burgled you/intruded. not if you already scared them off before entering/doing you any damage

And he didn't mention the Tour De France once... perhaps there are two Tony Martins?

That's a good point about the birdshot cartridges - it shows that he wasn't necessarily planning to kill anyone that he shot at, if he did have that intention, buckshot cartridges are readily available and are designed to kill large, stationary mammals.
