THe Ipcress File is in my top ten spy films and shall probably always remain so. As an example of pure a callan-like, gritty, dirty, ex-scumbag squaddie bottom of the stheap real-life 'spy' type.
It was also a Salzberg film. I've read Caine's autobiog, this was one of Caine's first big films.
Yes it's a 60's film, so it's dated, in more ways than one, but it's a cold war film and the height of the cold war was the 60s...now I'm gonna have to think on my top ten spy films.

From the same era are 'Odessa File' with John Voight made some years later but still cold war period), and 'Funeral in Berlin' with Harry Palmer/Michael Caine again. These are so atmospheric and are redolent of the time.
And king of gritty and atmospheric, 'The Spy Who Came In From The Cold'.Halb said:
Missed it today, so I forget, the shot with the eggs, yOu may notice those aren't Caine's hands. Not sure if coffee/other shots are also hand close-ups
The hands belonged to Len Deighton Definitely in my 'top ten', it's one of those films which I can happily watch over and over again, all the right ingredients are there somehow, the icing on the cake being John Barry's wonderful score.
