Spent 30min in the back of a police car today, car showing on the database as no insurance.

Nice enough about it, but still looking at 6 points a £300 fine and car impounded.

Police call the insurance company who confirm no policy but listen back to the most recent phone call three months ago when I called to haggle at renewal time.

Turns out they didn't take the renewal payment when they said so agreed it was their fault. Large sigh of relief and get an apology for holding me up and sent on my way. Insurance agreed to cover the gap and renew from today at the same price.

30min for 3 months free insurance not too bad and police were perfectly pleasant. Probably done 8k miles uninsured so surprised it took that long to show up.

Not a huge amount, getting old and it was my commuter diesel. Used to be if your insurance stopped you would at least be sent a letter and your copy of your no claims history. If i've given card details over the phone and they confirm they are happy most like me would assume it is bought and paid for.

Will double check for new policy documents coming through at least to email next time.

And no renewal acknowledgement, nor a Certificate of Insurance posted or e-mailed?

How did you get them to replay a recording of a previous phonically so quickly?

Took 20min of the police talking to the insurance database people who were calling the insurance broker. Thankfully they obviously record all the conversations in an easily accessible way.

Policy documents and certificate all online so this company doesn't email the documents out plus I had been with them the year before and was told it would renew at the date my existing policy ran out which was a few weeks after the phone call.

Powerfully build company director; wouldn't even bother to bend over to pick up £1,000 if they dropped it? wink

Had the same last year but had to suck it up. Insurer who I thought i was insured with (But who flatly denied it when I rang them at the roadside, and again the next day) wrote to me 7 months later saying there was a system error and I was indeed insured.

After lots of letters to Wiltshire police and the DVLA etc. I got the fine refunded and the points knocked off.

Insurer refunded my hard costs (Barrister, increased premiums,) but made only a small payment towards my time and inconvenience.
I am currently with the financial ombudsman asking them to take a look

It happens folks - check your bank account!!!

Had an issue with Admiral multi car a couple of years ago. Bought a Porsche Cayenne, asked that be added but the Jeep left on cover as well as the 2 MX5s. On renewal 6 weeks later turned out they had taken the insurance off the Jeep & put it on the Cayenne. They listened back to the call & agreed that I asked multiple times on the call whether the Jeep was still on cover & the Cayenne was added. Profuse apologies, back dated cover, thanks Admiral.

I know, I worked in that industry for over 30 years - which is why I always insist on an E-mail, or at least a text!

Mind you I did manage to resolve a dispute with BT by noting the date and time of a call I made to them that was "recorded for training purposes" - I asked them for a transcript of the conversation, but they didn't seem keen to release that! So I got what I had asked for in the first place!

30 minutes!? Bloody wish I could get insurance stuff sorted out that quickly at the roadside!

I don't trust insurance companies. I pay monthly due to increase from a ongoing claim at the time. Each month I log onto Halifax to check the direct debit has been taken out.

Although it does amaze me how many people don't get the emails/letters/texts saying their payment has not gone.

I check the MIB database a few days after renewal to make sure the car is on there, but it still didn't catch a very well known company who set one of my daughters up with a policy dated for the previous year!

She didn't open the thick initial letter with the new policy in it, but thankfully did open the single page "your insurance has expired" letter they sent a couple of days later.

Exactly the same thing happened to me , they can find the recordings very quickly , I got a letter to take to the police station, of Esure, i was uninsured for 4 months. It was a VERY scary 40 minutes at the road side . I too did not notice the money hadn’t been taken or a certificate turn up in the post.
The policy was only £180 , the first thing the police asked when they stopped me was “are you having money issues” which seemed odd

If true, then it is bordering on a miracle, and a very cool story indeed. I havent heard of an insurer offering retrospective cover before.

In my daughter's case I think the phrase they used was they agreed to be "held liable". No police or incident involved though, it was just an admin thing.

I've just put a new to me car on my multi-car policy to the end of the policy to allow it to be insured while I compare with specialist insurance for it.

It was from Dec 12th to Dec 21st at a cost of £14. Got a letter in the post confirming which I didn't read until the night before collecting. It said that the car had been removed from the policy between those sates with a refund of the £14!! Now obvs that is a mistake. Anyway I phoned up and checked and they said yes definitely insured, letter is wrong. Here's to hope!
