Struggling to find nice looking light fittings.

We are currently re-wiring the whole house, an large Edwardian property that's been split into two, so the two reception rooms we have are reasonably large with original full hieght fireplaces and the like, the lounge is oak paneled for the lower half of the walls. Not aiming for recreating an period home, but hopefully aiming for a sympathetic look with modern twist.

Lots of fittings seem to be either super modern which would clash badly, or cheap looking imitation 'antique brass' type things. Tried looking at vintage fittings but we've ruled out anything with fake candles and need 2-3 for each room which limits options.

So yes, any advice on where we should be looking welcome because I think if I put paper globes up even as a stop gap I might end up single!

Jim Lawrence. Nice, though pricey.

Ok, not come across any of the above so will check them out.

Have been watching Harry's thread but not picked up in the light fitting supplier.

We're on the Wirral, so NW.

Thanks

Daniel

I also get all of ours from Jim Lawrence - they're also great for curtain rails, door furniture, etc.

I’m in a similar position. New (v old) house has lots of wiring for wall lights (4+ in each room) and I can’t really find anything on these lighting sites that is a bit funky and not something that my parents would have chosen in the 1980s.

I know you get what you pay for, but some of those prices are eye watering.

I’ve found that Amazon (obviously) has a v wide selection with slightly different styles to those on the links above.

For example for my home office and also the snug I searched amazon for “wall light industrial” and it brought up some different styles - lots with large glass shades / round ball glass shades for circa £40 each. I was sceptical but I’ve done 2 rooms so far at this price point and they have actually been v good quality.

Eg I put these in my home office https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pathson-Industrial-Fittin...

I have also used some slightly different more vintage looking LED bulbs rather than just ordinary light bulbs. Not to everyone’s taste I appreciate

Per previous posters if you want "trad" then Jim Lawrence are ok. If you want to push it a bit then:

https://www.busterandpunch.com do some great lighting and hardware to go with it
https://www.stocktons.co.uk/ some nice options from Timothy Oulton
https://www.houseology.com/designer-lighting for a good overview of options (not all modern lighting is, err, modern)

Then you can do the vintage/retro industrial which is typically best served by browsing eBay- keep an eye out for Jielde, Dugdills, Holophane (just as examples)

Also checkout out https://www.trinitymarine.co.uk/ which has some great lighting pulled from various ships/boats

Then if you have deep pockets there's the option to look at fully bespoke

If Holophane is your thing repro's are a very poor imitation of the original

US ebay is a good source (even with the shipping!)

Try chehoma.com - I bought some stuff a while back, it wasn't too pricey and is really good quality.

We got our kitchen ceiling lights and wall lights from here

http://www.industville.com

Some are very industrial in style but they might fit what you are looking for.

Not forgetting that buying a decent light fitting is only part of the story. Once you have the fitting you then need to buy replacement bulbs which turns in to a different nightmare. Oh for the days when you had a choice of about screwfit or bayonet, globe bulb or candle effect all at various wattages and all sold by every retailer.

We went with subtle "industrial" wall lights in out refurbished 1700's cottage, LED edison style bulbs

Looks traditional but funky/modern and one of the best things I did to give it a younger non grandma edge

Some good suggestions above.

One thing you might consider is plaster lights.

We used them in the breakfast room - you paint them same colour as the walls so they're not that much of a feature. Depends what you want really. We thought the same as you - wanted something that wasn't olde worlde, but wasn't out and out modern such that it jarred with the house. In the end we went for these in that room because we didn't actually want some sort of feature - we just wanted light smile

Just google for 'plaster lights'
