Hello,

My 1993 T̶a̶c̶h̶o̶ Odo is stuck, like many it seems.

Is there a preferred company to refurbish the speedo unit?

Thanks in advance

Ollie

Preferred is not a description I would use for 'Speedy Cables' but I suspect will be your only option.
Do not expect to see it again until late summer.

If you mean the odometer, the fix isn't too difficult once you have the speedo out (assuming it's the mechanical type)

Well, that's embarrassing.

Odometer is exactly what I mean...Do you have some more information on the fix then?

Thanks in advance.

Getting inside the housing requires unscrewing the back housing from the innards an gently flaring out the back of the front bezel so that the front and back can come apart. Easy enough so far, the key is to pry gently to avoid distorting the bezel.

Next, look at the coil that actuates the ratchet mechanism of the odometer, there’s a hinged plate that the coil moves up and down when it is energized. You can move it by hand to see what it’s supposed to do.... In my case, there was a sticker that was once stuck to the hinged plate that had become unstuck. It’s aluminium, and is essential to the circuit. The purpose is to confirm that the lever has moved fully and de-energize the coil so that the lever can reset. All we have to do is stick it back where it belongs with some super glue.

Here’s a picture of mine after gluing back:

You may have another problem, but honestly this design is so rugged apart from the crappy sticker, I’d be surprised. It’s got to be the noisiest odometer ever!

Is it stuck on xx,999? If so have you tried giving it a good thump on the dash above the unit? This solves a lot of stuck Speedo problems

Thanks for the replies!
It is stuck on **399 but punching the dash/tapping the glass has no effect.

It's got to be worth a go pulling it all apart and having a look...my dash is off so it's easy enough to remove now. Would you suggest lubricating any of it?

Presumably there was some lubrication when new in the needle spindle, and possibly the shaft and ratchet inside the odometer? I’d go careful using a sewing machine dropper if you decide to oil anything. I didn’t because the odometer mechanism is brutally powerful anyway and the speedo needle was nice and free.

Give Jodie Wiles a call at Python Racing. 01206 820044.
He has just fixed and upgraded my heater control box in under a week.
Great guy to deal with. All I don't know is if he does Odometers, but one call will answer that.

You can imagine the fun I had at 99999. laugh

At the time I was running in a new engine, so needed to know how far I had been on it.
I had finished the running in by the time it suddenly decided to work again.

Mine has never failed to restart, but it can take a while.

I find that tapping the glass at the same time as thumping the dash top with the other hand, while driving fast backwards, is quite effective.
Not sure what it has to do with getting the odometer to work, but it kept the grandchildren amused as the wife went to change her underwear..... eek
