Read a few reviews, shouldn't have as none are saying it's amazing.
Its not amazing. Its just quite steady and an intro with a few big twists
I also enjoyed it. Unsure about the reveal at the end though and what it means.

YESSSS Picard is back!!!!!
Really really enjoyed it, dont really bother with critics reviews these days, it is like they think they have to write something original to feel relevant rather than what they actually thought about it. Anyway, if you are a trekkie you will like it. Cant wait for more

Have to say, I'm a bit disappointed with the first episode and I can't quite put my finger on why. Didn't really do it for me.

Annoying having to wait a week between episodes. How 1990s! Luckily it wasn't so amazing that I can't wait. Then again I disliked TNG when that first came out!

This first episode was pretty good IMO. Did a fine job of reintroducing a character with the depth and breadth of Picard, gave enough detail to fill people in on the events of the last two decades and their resulting impacts on societies, and introduced new characters with just enough depth to give you a slight flavour of their relevance, while still leaving many subtle questions and a little mystery surrounding them all.

If people don't remember Lal or Bruce Maddox from the relevant episodes of TNG I'd suggest rewatching the relevant episodes, or reading up on who those two characters are.

As it's available in the UK now, I won't place the below in spoiler tags. So stop reading here if you've not watched ep1.
Did anybody notice the full name of the museum Picard went to visit? Subtle nod, or a detail hinting at future directions in the story?
In the "coming" clips for season 1 at the end of the episode - any speculation on who the Borg we get a fleeting glimpse of could be, or resembles?

s?
Daystrom Institute wasn't it. Complete with bits in the drawer
Funny thing was bits of this reminded me of something I couldn't quite place but my wife twigged it. "maybe they are like those human Dalek things that kidnapped Matt Smith and took him to the Dalek prison thing"

No, the museum was visited earlier in the episode, before the visit to the Daystrom Institute.

The android in the the drawer was B4, from the ST Nemesis movie.

I loved every second of it. Superb cinematography with no lens flares, no stupid camera angles and excellent special effects, and a central character you can actually like. So much better than The Michael Burnham Show ST Discovery. An intriguing story line as well.

From the trailer at the end it looks like it will get even better. Really looking forward to the next episode.

Liked it and it's kinda nice that you have to wait for the next one rather than binging them, though the first episode has given away the overall story arc for the series (waiting for the twists now)

I knew it was B4 bit of a shame as last time he was busy humming to PIcard at the end of Nemesis

Nothing stands out about it.

Same here.I usually try and ignore the reviews and spoilers and trailers etc and just enjoy it.

I’m not even a big Trekkie and liked it.

Yeah I agree. It also makes discussing the series much better than when many have seen the whole lot already

I tend to agree. It was full of cliches.

Superficially it was watchable, but the plot was wafer thin thoughout.

Beaming goons down to shoot perfectly either side of her feet and put a bag over her head made me laugh. Just beam her into a cell.

She's got cloaking tech, as such I'd suspect they couldn't get a lock on her. Beam a bomb next to her is easier!

I tried to give this a fair shake and TBH, the start was promising, but it just fell over after that. The main reason is, if it was a program standing on its own then it would be fine, the problem is they are selling it as the continuation of TNG\Star Trek.

This means it has baggage and some story rules it needs to follow if it wants to use these characters, however from the first episode i can see they are just slapping on a story they want to tell but couldnt get it made, so used Star Trek as a framework just to get it out, this is really common with Genre franchises nowadays and you see it in so many reboots and remakes.

Spoilers below so don't read if you don't want to see stuff! smile

The main big problems this episode has, that are fundamental to the plot arc i can see going forward:

Data already had a daughter, Lal, if he painted a picture of his "daughter" it would of been her 30 years ago, not this new daughter that was created after his 'death'.

Starfleet evacuating Romulus like Dunkirk, to save "millions". well as a supernova would wipe out an entire star system, it would be billions at a minimum, also, why would Romulus need the federation to save it, the Romulan Star Empire was massive, they are one of the biggest powers in the Alpha Quadrant, they would have more than enough spare planets, fleets etc to do their own rescue effort, and they would not want any help from their oldest former arch enemy.

Cloning a human from an android...just no, for a start you cant clone synthetic material to create biological material, you can replicate something but cloning has the connotation of genetics which data doesn't have. even with sci-fi hand waving, it was a stupid writing choice.

I also have heard that it doesn't get going to an actual starship till after episode 3, i just have an awful feeling its all going to be about some random hodge podge crew, picard will be sat on the sidelines (he is 80+ tbf) and its going to be a generic sci fi show that used the Star trek name to get made.

Hopefully with the new ViacomCBS merger and bad robot deal finishing, there can be a break and a new star trek that has a fresh feel to it but doesn't have soap opera writers trying to turn it into a beige show like Terra Nova.

I did like seeing some nods to old trek but it felt like that was a bit "that's all you get, old trek is dead now, why dont you like this new thing...your not a (insert anti-woke stereotype here etc)"

Anyway...as you were......

Grumbles in background holding model of enterprise E.......
