Wonderful episode. Clearly written by people who understand and respect the source material. I can hear Kirk shouting “Are you not entertained!”

I certainly was entertained.
Yes, another absolutely great episode. The quality of the show has been consistently high since the first ep of this season so probably safe to say that we can expect them not to drop the ball now.

I just hope the payoff for the Jack 'hallucinations' is good and not some sort of cop-out or a stretch too far. So far, they've excelled in delivering satisfying payoffs, even to stuff that we didn't expect to get a payoff for biglaugh

Also a great thing is how well they have introduced new characters this season. Jack could have been very tricky to integrate but the talented actor and the good writing really helps him fit straight in. Captain Shaw is just a bloody great character. And Sidney LaForge is pretty good as well. Far better than any of the new characters that were introduced in previous seasons. Also, miles better than any of the Discovery characters except maybe for Lorca (in pretend Prime Universe mode) who was only around for the first Season really.

do like Shaw - not fully convinced he's better than Anson Mount's Pike or (possibly) Empress Georgiou

Talking of Battlestar when the Starfleet security ships were talking to their away team on Daystrom did I hear them call their crew-member Starbuck ?, I’ve rewound a couple of times but I’m still not sure.
Pretty sure I heard Starbuck being said.

among all the series, there were 79 episodes of The Original Series, 178 episodes of The Next Generation, 176 episodes of Deep Space Nine, 172 episodes of Voyager, and 98 episodes of Enterprise, for a total of 703 hour-long episodes.

And how many from the amazingly relavent and oh so popular and on point Discovery....65.... including the final season...

Bizarre metric for comparison. There’s no way to do a fair comparison with that data.

That’s a strange measure of the success of a series? Is more always better? Eastenders must be the best thing ever made!

Especially given the was way modern series are commissioned these days on much shorter runs.

I really feel dirty sticking up for STD, but... a lot of US TV has accepted the 24/28 episode seasons are (potentially) ruinously expensive and so seem to be chopped down to 10 (or so) per season. With this modern metric it's hard to compare popularity purely on the number of episodes - irrelevant really as everyone knows that the best series is DS9, the best captain was Sisko and best returning character was Garak (followed by Gul Dukat)

That there will only be 65 comes as a great relief to many, but I agree, cant really compare them all on episodes done. Enterprise, despite suffering from "ST fatigue" was excellent at times (I certainly prefer it to Voyager and like it as much as TNG and DS9) and was ultimately killed off by changes at the TV network causing a total change in programming direction. Far more ST fans have revisited it since and realised how good it was many years later. Plus there are many tv series which never made it that far as they just never caught public attention, but were also excellent.

Wasn't it just completely dismissed as Irumodic Syndrome inherited from Picard?

I know you’re joking, but you’re also not wrong.

DS9 was a B5 rip off.

I know B5 has its fans but I've sat through much of it (wifey was a big fan and has the dvds) and it really pales next to DS9 for me. Acting quality, characters, everything. Pace wise it just seems to plod much of the time.

Without it DS9 wouldn’t exist. they literally copied the pitch and stuck a star trek logo on it.
I did quite like DS9 and it obviously had a bigger budget, but it’s not as good.

I know the whole B5/DS9 story and as wrong as nicking the idea was (allegedly). I just think DS9 did it all far better. Even so, it's a shame Stracynski's recent pitch for a reboot never got the green light.
