I think "the nerd rage" is fueled in part by incredulity.

Something that's being passed off as Star Trek has lost the ethos and entire point of the original theme.

It would be like having a new series of Postman Pat written and produced by Quentin Tarantino.

I'd like to watch that...

I see it the other way round. For the full nerd rage, have a look at the Discovery thread. It's all about not following cannon apparently. Not proper star trek.

The problem the enraged nerds now have is that Picard was supposed to be the one true star trek. But it's crap. So the only defence having read the thread so far seems to be the obsession over how they've got the details/cannon etc right.

But it's still crap.

I refer you to my previous comment about a killer plot armoured Legolas with a sword and raise you #Irocfan's 'Pirate Picard'.

Yep - the writing... My wife finished 1 of 7 of 9's dramatic pause "reveal" sentences last night. She watches a lot of US drama and scifi. The writers must all just have been taught at the same time. Very poor.
“Darling, if you dressed as 7 I think you completing her lines would be more convincing... please do...please please please please” is the line you were looking for tongue out
rofl Ah I'm old fashioned - she can stick to the French maid outfit laugh
hehe

the main problem with Picard is of course that Picard wasn't going to be in the programme. Originally it was to be called Gizzard and would feature a totally new character an ageing Starfleet officer upset and disillusioned with the way Starfleet had gone.

He would of then stolen a starship - the excelsior class NCC 1701-B from the space museum and it would have been populated by other newer characters including the mercenary Lukeos
This idea was liked by executives but was then altered when it became clear that Patrick Stewart was interested in appearing as another ageing disillusioned officer who would join him in his quest.
As the character of Picard was obviously more well known his character took precedence.

My god, can not believe some of the bhing going on in this thread, you guys really do love to pick apart and analyse every single episode, So it is not exactly the same as the original, boo hoo, get over it and just enjoy it for what it is - an entertaining sci-fi show that is based on the Star Trek universe. If you are not enjoying it, dont watch it, although that will never happen as you wont be able to post on this thread how crap it was.

I'm really enjoying it

You can never compare a single episode series to this format - Picard is building nicely imo

Izzard you say?

I'd watch the hell out of that.

Oh, wait, no you didn't. Carry on...

I'm with you

In any case the series steps up a pace when news reaches Picard that Wesley Crusher is being held captive on the planet Buollocks. by the scriptenriteous A rescue mission is undertaken and Wesley then becomes a member of the crew..

Well, enjoyed the first episode but lost interest by about episode 3 and have skimmed the last 2.

Another to add to the list of recent shows/movies that should have been good fun but instead have fallen foul to current trends in the media and seem more concerned with their 'message' than good writing and actually entertaining the audience.

Oh well, let' see how Bond gets on..

I'll freely admit to being cursed to seeing instant detail in everything I throw my eyes onto, but go back to ep.5 and watch some of the clips in Stardust City. Names of previous characters and entertainment from DS9 and TNG prominently on display absolutely everywhere, and previous characters and species being name dropped. That drink used to knock Maddox out was offered to Kirk in the TOS and was a regular thing in DS9 (can't remember it's name). And when Seven is back on the ship the theme tune from Voyager features briefly. Every episode has been the same - rammed full of nods and references for the nerds to obsess over.
Despite owning all ST (apart from Voyager) I realise I've missed most of those, so can't be the nerd I have occasionally been called. I'm not acually unhappy about this, haha! Drugged drinks in any tv aren't actually uncommon to be fair. I was a bit disappointed that Maddox wasn't the same actor that played him in TNG though.

So as I don't have to dive into other depths of the internet how is it being received elsewhere, amongst "the nerds"?

Would get my watch hehe

I am still enjoying it. Intro to EP5 was a little OTT I reckon they could have got away with cutting the frames and left the implication in place just fine.

Worth listening to the podcast that goes alongside this. It explains some of its pacing issues.

There are 12 sided dice flying around everywhere in rage and many many box fresh toys being opened in anger.

Kinda belies the constant "the fans will love it" PR from PS and the show runners beforehand then...!

Yep ever since he appeared on Big Bang as Sheldon’s nemesis with a brilliant send up of himself, he went up massively in my estimations.

I’m enjoying it, yes there are some weird decisions like pirate Picard putting on a French accent when he’s supposed to be French anyway, a bunch of Easter eggs thrown together when reaching Stardust City (Mott’s ha imporeum, Wuarks bar, Dabo tables etc), but I’ll keep watching.

My main gripe is I’ve got to keep answering my wife’s questions throughout....”What do you mean Picard used to be a Borg?!”

I think that Alex Kurtzman being banished from anything Star Trek related forever is generally considered a desirable outcome.

The general consensus is that this is not Star Trek.

Even the most die hard fans realise that Trek has to evolve but 54 years on and Roddenbury's dream means that at least the core values should remain the same.

There is anger that an interesting, thoughtful, positive and hopeful series has to be turned into something that's just like everything else. Human life is now cheap, revenge is justifiable, everything's bleak and we're all going to die. Could just watch Eastenders then.

If you like dark and gritty sci-fi then The Expanse is a brilliant series - but it isn't and doesn't try to be Star Trek in any way.

Picard is a purely cynical attempt to launch a mediocre sci-fi by using one big name, who they'll likely kill off / have die ASAP, whilst throwing in references (some of them accurate, some of them written by five year olds) to a once loved series.

It's been described as a series written by people who don't understand Star Trek for people who don't like Star Trek.

Much of it is political going back to 2006 when CBS effectively took Star Trek from Paramount and didn't want it.
In 2009 we got the alternative licensing for JJ Abrams to make the Star Trek feature films but they had to be different to the original by an amount believed to be 25%.

This gave us the Kelvin Timeline of the new films and Star Trek:Discovery.

This continued until 2019 when a merger then affected the future of Star Trek which may now be able to return to a more original theme.

The hope amongst Trekkies was that this would happen with Picard and / or Season 3 of Discovery.

As yet it's not going well and we seem to be getting weekly installments of "Tarantino in Space".

It's not going well

Critic Reviews are mostly very good - although they were for Doctor Who, Ghostbusters 2, Terminator Dark Fate...

Fan Reviews are mostly bad...apart from those who are about 12.

It would be most interesting to see what age the angriest fans are at.
