I'm really struggling with those ascribing terms such as "great" to this series.
It's been better than I feared, but nothing more.
Yes, I have watched it, despite the fact "[I don't have to][no-one is forcing me to]".
It's...alright. Nothing more.
The last series, one at least had the impression that messrs LeBlanc, Harris and Reid were trying to run with the torch from the 'CHM Era'. This series, they seem content to merely carry it in a pretty lazy manner. The Lotus 79 piece was the only real flicker of passion in the whole series, in my opinion.
'Old new top gear' was struggling to match its pomp by the end, but can anyone see the current lineup producing anything to match moments like Exige vs Apache, the 3 supercars to Millau, the E-Type 50th anniversary piece, the British manufacturing piece, or the Aston V12 Vantage piece? I honestly can't, and that saddens and worries me.
Better than “alright” for me, although I found MLB more entertaining than PM and AF, who are in turn better than the dire RR. It's been better than I feared, but nothing more.

I’d agree, however, that nothing since the CHM era can compare to the episodes you refer to, and especially the Aston and British manufacturing ones. Classic Top Gear for me.

I enjoyed the Lotus 79 segment.
Otherwise I thought most of this series was pretty poor. My wife watched the second half of last nights episode. She said that she thought the presenters "lacked finesse".
My missus piped up "this is like proper Tog Gear again" during the Lotus segment. Otherwise I thought most of this series was pretty poor. My wife watched the second half of last nights episode. She said that she thought the presenters "lacked finesse".

How many seasons in were they before they did that though. These guys have been rushed in, do a few episodes, see if it works, come back later in the year and do it better.I’d agree, however, that nothing since the CHM era can compare to the episodes you refer to, and especially the Aston and British manufacturing ones. I feared the worst but I think Paddy did well, FF has on the whole been terrible and out of his depth but in E05 seemed to do alright and focus on the cars and the challenges rather than over the top childish horsing around he came across a lot better. Harris is a really good presenter on it, we have to hope that FF and Paddy keep improving. It's been better than I feared, but nothing more.

The writers do need to come up with something better though on the format and content front, it felt a bit empty in the 5 episodes, a few glimmers I really enjoyed, I loved the Iceland piece and the Lotus piece for example - but need to drop the pointless celebrity section although appreciate this is an advert more than actually part of the show.
Overall pretty good, better than what came before in the previous couple of years, I agree that there were amazing episodes as cited above but CHM did do (I am totally guessing) something like 200+ episodes together and 190 of them are quite forgettable, so am not getting too hung up on it.
Really not sure why they aren't showing the power laps it's a few more seconds, I guess it gives them the free time to have the car challenge bit of SIARFC bit which for me is the way that segment should work i.e lose the whole sitting on the couch chat, have the challenge and lap then boom next bit. Better still would be to do away with celebs altogether much like the last series of the grand tour.
Other than Bob who was humourous I couldn't give a fk and most of them have been on before so it's just treading water these days.

it could be, I don't know.
Does anyone else remember last year, after Freddie and Paddy had been announced as the new presenters, there were some "spy shots" taken of them doing some filming, and it was suggested at the time then that The Stig, whoever it was, was a woman.
As far as I can recall of this series all we've seen of The Stig has been in the Hearse challenge where they drove the "other" sensible family car?

RE the guests. I've said it before (probably many dozen pages back) my logic is that this is a necessary something to chop when the episodes get sold to Dave. When you watch on the BBC it's maybe 10 minutes of fluff, when a few years later you re-watch on Dave it's 20 seconds then, 'right, your lap' - to allow ad time (it still is broadcast over an hour)
Someone correct me if I guessed wrong.

Couldn't be bothered watching it once they'd messed about with the schedule, will watch it tonight on the iplayer, thanks for the heads up regarding Will Young, at least that's 10 mins I can save myself.
What really p*ssed me off at the time was being told it would start at 8.30 and then switching over to find it had already begun. I have a habit of recording all of my regular programmes even if I'm intending to watch them "live" so all was well. Still annoyed me though - it was only doubles tennis, not the mens' or womens' singles finals. Bah humbug.Fermit and Sexy Sarah said:

I always assumed they removed the entire segment for overseas broadcasts - where Top Gear is (or was) a huge money spinner for the BBC.Someone correct me if I guessed wrong.

It was suggested earlier in this thread that there has been a "falling out" between the driver playing The Stig and the TG bosses
Isn't the whole point of The Stig that there are multiple drivers playing the role. Even if your Main Stig gets the hump then there's plenty of jobbing pro-drivers who could step in at a moment's notice.Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
