Less race more tourist information it seems..
Always been that way, it’s part of the joy of the programme otherwise it’s 60 minutes of people sitting on buses and trains.

Interesting bunch so far but the mother and daughter look destined to run out of money before leaving Japan hehe
Some of the train journeys were cheap! £7.38 from town to town.

Me too, nice bunch of people.
The two lads were excellent and very funny (in a genuine and not scripted manner) and the brother and sister as well.
We're planning a few weeks in Japan within the next five years and this definitely made me want to bring that forward.

I did enjoy that episode. The two young lads seem very focussed and very thorough with their planning. I also like the brother and sister combo. I feel they might be the winners. The retired couple just seem to be out there enjoying themselves and soaking up the culture and scenery. I have to agree about the mother and daughter who have spent a fair portion of the budget already. They will probably be broke by the time they leave the next country.

Caught up with it yesterday, loved it as I have been to Japan and it makes me want to return even more than before.

The old couple just seem way too relaxed, if previous series are to be anything to by they may be axed mid-series if they are still last.

The young lads, very focused but also not spending the time to enjoy themselves, I do wonder of they'll get on each others nerves more and more or it will strengthen their friendship?

Brother/sister, I think these could be in with a shout, he seems like a typical slacker but he's willing so far, she's got a good head on her shoulders.

Mother/Daughter #1 - I was in awe of how she was picking up Japanese on the coach, but they didn't half churn through some cash, I think they'll do well with the lingo and get advice, but they need to reign in their spending and focus on getting from A-B efficiently in terms or time/money.

Mother/Daughter #2 - I really liked these, they get on well and they seem to really enjoy the people/experience, personally I want them to win, but I'm not sure they have that killer edge to do so.

I wasn't particularly engaged by last night's episode but I did think Isabel was rude and arrogant to be late to the job arranged for her and her mother.

I could see where she was coming from with getting buses sorted before earning money but if she's supposed to be somewhere at a certain time she's got to be there. It shows further poor judgement from her when prioritising. And to ask for more money from the restaurant owner at the end was really rude.

The lads seem ok, or at least edited to be that way.

I wasn't impressed by the old boy queue jumping. You wouldn't do it here and you certainly shouldn't do it in Japan.

The other pairings seem a bit meh by comparison.

Whoever is last is getting dropped next week if I was paying attention at the end.

I'd prefer the old (my age!!) couple to go because he's the only one that actually annoys me but some of the others need to get their act together - the couple that didn't make the checkpoint last night were still 370km away so they really are going to have to pull their fingers out.

In the first episode, they did post briefly, the start of the route, which seemed somewhat circuitous, possibly because of filming permits.

A race, 10 days to get from Hokkaido to Fukuoka, quick search suggests it can be done by bus in less than 2 days. In addition, the mileages being quoted, seem very wide of the mark.

Putting all that to one side; the route looks interesting and the teams seem likeable. Betty and James (brother and sister), think they will do well; he seems to have the right approach. Owen and Alfie (best friends) Alfie is a bit intense, but they are young.

It’s all shaping up to be a really good season, looking forward to the rest of it.

The 2 lads said we must up our game now after coming 2nd (only by 2 mins) - then only travelled 60kms in 1 day to Kobe when they needed to get to a ferry 650kms away - it's almost as ridiculous as Hunted - reality TV I guess
The mother and daughter who hadn't reached the checkpoint will be maybe 2 days behind so guess they will be going out but we will see what happens

What on Earth were those things in the Fish Market where the mum laughed and said that they looked like peristalsis.

I actually laughed out loud at that biggrin

Kjs62 said “it's almost as ridiculous as Hunted - reality TV I guess” maybe not as much as you think, sure contestants can’t just go ‘walkabout’ for obvious reasons.

Interesting article here:

There’s definitely some odd editing but I think the journey is a lot more legit than Hunted.

Just ‘in theory’ but brought up from a conversation with my wife…

If I went on the show with my business partner, he’d either do incredibly well, or he’d convince me to go out on the first night, we’d blow through all the cash and then get kicked off the show the next morning. laugh

Under these circumstances, what do you think the producers would do? Get the others to start again with a 5th team? Carry on with 4 and no one gets eliminated? Would our night out get shown or cut?

Last year a team had to leave early as they’d genuinely burned through the cash, but would be interesting to know what they’d do if it was blown on booze.

As I said, in theory. In real life I’d go with my brother. Reckon we’d make a solid team and have interesting enough backgrounds to actually be considered. I couldn’t do the time off work/family though.

I'd hope they'd figure you out in the pre-filtering stages before making it onto the show.

If not, my guess is they'd show it with careful editing to make you look a pair of absolute tts - and let the other 4 continue.

There was a pair that lost their money belt in an earlier series, albeit later on - and they just dropped out whilst the others continued.

Another interesting episode, why the sudden route change; it appears to have been filmed in the autumn of 23?

Being an elimination round, seemed odd the loosing pair chose to work; it’s almost as if they wanted an out.

Stephen and Viv (husband and wife), he does seem to be playing the old card a bit too much.

Eugenie and Isabel, they are really not very nice to each other.

Owen and Alfie, impressive for their age. Betty and James, he’s more clued up than she makes out.

Surprised they didn’t spend more time in Vietnam, could it be that it, comes down to the local ‘Tourist Board’s’’ budget?

Interested to see where they go next.

I found it strange also why the mother and daughter who were so far behind chose to work and not press on to the checkpoint. I am sure they still had a fair bit of their budget left and didn't need to work on this leg. Maybe they just became resigned to the fact that they were so far behind and decided to take it easy. The old boy Stephen is starting to grate with me. Attempting to push in to queues and walking along the train with a Help Please board. I would like the brother and sister combo to win but I feel it will be the two best friends. One of them seems very driven almost to the point of ADHD. The other guy is fairly laid back. I think the next leg must be through Thailand I would guess.

It has to be the best way for TV to do a travelog.

The race is almost incidental as having a camera/production team with you 24/7 does make it a bit of a sham. However, it does give the teams their 15+mins of fame and for some, that is probably sufficient.

As another old guy, I am also hating the old-guy. He is a prat!

The brother and sister and young guys, seem quite pragmatic and worthy of a win.

Brydie & Sharon seemed to be the least personally competitive pair of contestants so it wasn't surprising they were eliminated

This is interesting-updated weekly, so SPOILER ALERT don't look at it if you haven't watched the series so far

Watched the show since the first season-has there been any info on why China was skipped and they flew from South Korea to Vietnam? From memory they crossed through China in the first season? Assumed logistics or getting permissions etc?

The mother and daughter who were booted last week were so lackadaisical-not surprised they went or would care that they did.
