They even screwed up the final battle, running along the top of a star destroyed, really? And had the emperor had all those crews and ships on furlough for 30 years? Also they missed a chance to have white (rebel) stormtroopers fight red storm troopers.

I actually quite liked the Rey being a nobody angle.
I refuse to believe that the palpatine angle was even a possibility until after the last jedi. They just had to do something to give the story a proper baddie.

Does anyone know if palpatine was ever in the plan originally?
Apparently JJ has said that was always the plan, however I don't believe a word of it. They needed something to try and bring the fans back and Palpatine was it, also why the release was delayed I think. Nothing to do with Star Wars overdose (which was another excuse as to why TLJ wasn't well received) and just about needing the extra time to untangle the mess.
release was delayed because the original directors backed out, plus Leia death too !

tbh - they should have gone for another 2 films instead of cramming into 1, that way explore some of the stuff setup in TLJ, build us a new baddie (or re-introduce palpatine better) - but probably im guessing but (a) disney bottled it because of the star wars backlash from TLJ and SOLO, and (b) all the contracts for the actors were for 3 films only.

Either I’ve gone mad or it wasn’t delayed at all.

TFA 17/12/15
TLJ 14/12/17
ROS 19/12/19

Part of the problem is they rushed it to get it out on time.

Apparently the idea came from Abrams when he replaced Trevorrow, and Palpatine first appeared in concept art a couple of months before TLJ was released in cinemas.

Trevorrow was planning something different...

No comments on the Trevorrow script?
I think it was discussed on this thread back in January.

I watched it in the cinema. I hadn’t seen the previous episode, which might have helped me make sense of it.

After a while I realised I had no idea what was going on but that Daisy Ridley is very easy on the eye so I just let it wash over me.

No, Ruin Johnson is the tt, JJ just had to try and sort his turd fest out but failed.

Probably something to do with fitting the title so it makes some sort of sense.

So they can sell this awful Trilogy as part of the 'Skywalker Saga', even though the Skywalker Saga is about Anakin Skywalker who was 99% absent from these cash grabs.

Obviously it isn't, if you just think about it for a minute.

If families pass it down and that's it, are you suggesting ALL their ancestors had it... all the way back to their fish ancestors and single celled creatures they evolved from...? Seriously, Palpatine fish that could lift rocks with the force?

It's got to start somewhere, someone has to be the first person in any bloodline with the force.

That's what Rey is... something new.

Well, until they bottled it; which was a shame.
I agree, it was a shame.

It is ironic really that a story about redemption, new beginnings and hope consistently fails to break out of nostalgia and closed loop thinking in its delivery.

The one thing that RJ did well (and it is pretty much the one and only thing) in TLJ was introduce us to the possibility that many more people may be force sensitive and could then start to re-build a Jedi Order, with the young lad in the stables.

Again, something that wasn't ever mentioned again in the RoS. Which is why the sequel trilogy is such a mess.

The films were crap because he wasn’t the star and the make up lady didn’t know how to do his hair. I’m paraphrasing of course.

He think Disney is racist because he didn’t realise that Finn was Poochie to Kylo Renn and Raes itchy and scratchy.

yes

Although I can understand the frustration as his character was originally to be a lead (up there with Luke, Leia, Han) but ended up sidelined. I guess the trouble with Wokeness is that your genetic background is not always flavour of the year, and he was demoted due to the lack of a vagina in the wonderful Last Jedi.

I suspect it was also done due to trying to appease the Far East audience (whilst at the same time, trying to preach 'Wokeness' to the Western audience). Disney deserves all the trouble it now has to suffer.

Disney - we stand against racism and oppression all over the world! Except the parts of the world where it would hurt our income.

Said that, basically, he was only in the film because Disney wanted a black character to slap on all the posters so they could slap themselves on the back for being so woke, when actually they had no idea or intention of developing his character.

He makes a fair point IMO. The same could be said of a lot of the other characters, if you swap the word "Black" for something else. He feels his character was used as a box ticking exercise, but his box was the R-word, so he's upset a lot of people.

And this is the problem, they're trying so desperately to appease to the woke culture and to appeal to everyone that they miss the most important thing, a decent story. Get the story right and you can put any actor in any role regardless of race or gender and no one would bat an eyelid. Certainly not in the West, sadly places like China etc may still moan or have issues.

As someone said, they tried to be woke, but also tried desperately to appeal to the Chinese due to it's huge and growing market.

Just give us a good story, there's a reason most of us love Rogue One. It wasn't a story we were screaming out for, but it was done so well (granted, after a lot of fire-fighting and editing) that it's the one most people like most from the Disney stable.

Same with the Mandalorian, it's not something anyone thought they wanted, but it's really good, with just the right amount of new stuff and nostalgia and an interesting look at the collapse of the empire and the few imperials trying to cling to what little power they have left. But it's been done very well.

Calling the sequel trilogy part of the "Skywalker Saga" is bordering of blasphemy to fans and having Rey change her name at the end to tie it was just ridiculous.

I hope Disney learn from that mess, stick to single writers (and proper writers, not writer/directors) for any further trilogies and do some original stuff. When I heard that Disney had bought Star Wars I was really pleased and was looking forward to what they'd do with it, the Star Wars stuff they were doing at the theme parks was great (Star Wars weekends were brilliant and great fun). But they done a great job and throwing what should have been an easy money spinner into a train wreck. Pretty much being ept alive through Rogue One and The Mandalorian.
