There is a point where Gene says "I know, I know" to Alex outside the pub towards the end and it sounded so genuine.

That programme gave me goosebumps so many times and had such a great and lasting feelgood factor and was one of the greatest television events.

BUT why the hell did the BBC drop the fact that the ratings were also riding on the 1980s wave of nostalgia? Did they follow it? Nope...back to the bloody 1960s we go!!
"My Baby"

Yes. I spent ages tracking down the fourth season on DVD as I wasn't going to give HMV £8 for it. Finally splurged £3.50 on it (the other series were £1 each), and I might as well have kept the money.

I thought "Spooks" was good to the end, the odd dodgy episode but generally very high quality. As I recall, "Hustle" from the same company (Kudos) was also very good. Both did a similar thing in the final episode, too, which I liked.

Spooks was good across all seasons. To be fair I thought the next to last series was really good.
The only thing bad was that throughout so many agents / politicians were spies or criminals !

I stopped watching Frasier after Niles married Daphne, thinking that had to be jumping the shark, but have been told it stayed good to the end once they recovered from losing their writers in 9/11. Any opinions?
Big Frasier fan here

The problem was once they married Daphne and Niles there was no where for the show to go - it felt like the whole programme had been leading to that point

There are still a few good episodes after the marriage, but it definitely lost its way and the tension had gone

My votes go to:

Fawlty Towers
Porridge
Miami Vice
Banshee
Sopranos
The Wire
Breaking Bad

I don't think Blackadder can be counted as the first series was quite weak
OFAH jumped the shark with the horrible final trinity (the original finale was perfect)

Has anyone mentioned 'The Shield' yet?

It pisses all over GOT, Sopranos, The Wire etc.
Each season gets better and better, with a proper ending unlike Dexter which I loved but the ending was terrible.

All4 has the full Shield boxset available.

As mentioned by others Breaking Bad is good, as is Banshee.
Band of Brothers is perfection.

Entourage is another great show right to the end (don't bother with the movie though)

Hill Street Blues. They could re-run that now and it would still be top TV. Never went bad.

The Bill.

Dreadful change of style and pace. "Make it more edgy" I think was the term. st I call it and it died a painful death. Such a shame.

Agreed was excellent originally, but after the 'soapification' became utter crap.

Actually this thread is "great until the end " biggrin

I have mentioned it elsewhere in a different thread.

Ashes to Ashes
I was going to suggest this, Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes were phenomenal TV.

I slightly prefer Life on Mars, I would advise not reading all of your post if you've never watched it though! Kinda spoils the ending!

The Bill died when they stopped doing self-contained episodes and tried to be a soap.

Sorry, can’t agree, the last Xmas specials were terrible. I genuinely wish I hadn’t seen them.

yes Finding the valuable watch was where it should have stopped. They just had to bring it back so they could murder it.

The Shield

Seen nothing like it before or since in terms of its ability to ratchet up the tension. The final season was extraordinary.
