One thing that really jarred with me, oddly, is why if being unmarried and living in sin was so scandalous and shocking, was it perfectly ok for them to be showing public displays of affection, kissing and smooching in public, etc. Or had attitudes towards this relaxed somewhat in Edwardian times compared to the more up-tight Victorian times?
Apparently they met at “the society for free thinkers”, so I guess they refuse to be bound by the moral norms of the day. Which is a good way to end up ostracised and unemployable.

In general I agree with the views on this thread. It’s a mediocre Sunday evening BBC period drama that’s pushing the current BBC social agenda. Not really my sort of thing.

But I’ll stick with it.

There was a movement from the late 19th century onwards towards Bohemianism, especially amongst writers and artists, which manifested itself in unconventional relationships, free love, sex outside of marriage etc. Mainstream culture was uptight about this sort of thing until at least the end of the 20th century, but it did exist regardless of social disapproval.

Still rather see maahoosive gun metal grey tripodal alien war machines in my hour of Edwardian sci fi though....

Indeed. And if they had the luxury of the sprawling multi-season runtime of Game of Thrones or Downton Abbey, then perhaps such things might be interesting to pursue. But, given the very limited runtime of 3 hours, it seems like unnecessary baggage and padding in something too short to afford the luxury of such padding.

What I can’t work out is why the scriptwriters thought it would be a good idea to change whole chunks of the story and add subplots/flash forwards and other irrelevant faff.

They could have run this very closely to the original story, which would have made this most accurate/definitive screen version yet. If they had done this you could bet that it would have had a life in the DVD/BluRay, streaming market for years to come. As the Jeff Wayne Musical Version has for the last 40 years.

Instead, people aren’t even sticking with this drivel for episode 2 and 3. It will largely be forgotten about in a months time. What commercial sense was there for going off on a tangent and killing any potential follow on revenue by deviating so far from the original story.

I think that there is still time for the BBC to shoehorn in some more LBGTQ or BAME characters into an Edwardian, white, heterosexual society? I would be disappointed if they didn’t. I’m guessing the ship will not be called Thunderchild but The Thunberg.

But more seriously what was that about the Heath Robinson like teas-made? Will it turn out to be the saviour of mankind? Maybe instead of micro-organisms those naughty Martians are felled by a sub-standard brew. Obviously sub-standard as a result of the poor suppressed workers under an unjust imperialistic regime. Somebody needs to apologise.

BecauseBBC. Its a shame but its done now, I've accepted that its a steaming turd of an adaptation. I hoped the crazy number of bad reviews on IMDB was not a fair reflection but it is.

Is it because WotW is in the public domain that screenwriters think they can fk about with it at will?

There weren't quite as many songs or musical numbers as I remember either. Jeff Wayne will be spinning in his grave spin

He was looking quite well last December in Cardiff conducting his show.

They'll fall victim to the problem with all teasmade-like products - the milk's been out in a warm bedroom all night.

I'm quite enjoying it, but then I (a) haven't read the book, and (b) am easily entertained, usually, though I've noticed (and been irritated by) a lot of the stuff people have commented on, such as the pointless digging and the polystyrene wooden beams. But I have to keep reminding myself it's not a TV adaptation of the Jeff Wayne record, which is the only other version I've experienced in full. Oh, and some parts of the Tom Cruise film, but that always starts at a time where I'm going to the pub halfway through and it never seems worth recording the rest.

George could have just pretended to break up with here and gone back to the big mansion and his wife.
Pankhurst telescope lady could have been his bit on the side and this way his brother is happy as in these conservative god fearing uptight times that sort of thing is fine.
I guess we will never know due to the events that are unfolding.
