Funny, I did not stick it to the end of the Tom Cruise version.

Early onset of dementia meant that I could not find the power button for this version. Truly awful!

Nothing to do with "being PC" it was just appallingly bad. Badly written, confusing direction, over the top "acting".

Searching for a positive, I quite liked the "Martian" when we finally saw one and they did the "reveal it bit by bit" thing to build tension but then you look at it and it is a tripod creature that is supposedly operating an advanced technology, with what? It has a pointy stabby feet and a point stabby shooty out thing that sucks the juices out of dead things, how the flipping flippity flip did it/they create an advanced technology without the appendages to manipulate tools?

Hateful hateful hateful, aaargh!

Got to the end on catch up. It was a slog. I can manage the way the version went to a point but the last episode was a drag. Telescope got me going again.

3/10.

This. I really wanted to like it and put the original negative comments down to internet hyperbole. Then I watched it...

The biggest crime for me was the playing with the timeline. If they'd just told the story straight then it could have been great. Halfway through the last episode I was starting to cheer on the Martians...

What they should have done is used the Jeff Wayne soundtrack and filmed a complimentary video. That would have been brill!

Agreed, seem to recall Cruise-bashing was quite popular when it came out and the film reviews suffered as a result. Would have been excellent with a few less close ups of the star and a bit more alien action.

Worse than the cruise version? Doesn't seem possible, but I'm willing to accept

In the spirit of fairness and giving the other bloke a chance I watched this over the last 3 sunday evenings even though I had suffered it already.
Still fell asleep at all the same places.
Infuriating slow rubbish.
If my tv licence was due the next day I wouldn't have paid it especially as the BBC also demonstrates a passive aggressive act toward any political opposition and think we should fund it.

But when your tv licence does become due, you will pay it, won't you.

The Cruise version is terrible.

I have not seen Woke of the Worlds because I have not had a TV licence for a number of years, and either watch Netflix [American or foreign language series] or YouTube.

I have read the HG Wells novel and my mother still has the gatefold Jeff Wayne vinyl.

My interest was peaked when I heard that this adaptation was going to be aired (snap with 'His Dark Materials' - again, the 'Golden Compass' was appalling. Dreadful CGI), and then I read a number of reviews that described the adapatation as "Woke of the Worlds" and inwardly groaned. Like Clockwork Cupcake, I'm very much for equality, LGBT rights, etc (I was labelled a "gay sympathiser" at school because Boy George kissing Andy Bell at the Brit Awards didn't bother me), but painful shoe-horning of issues coupled with bad writing, and awful effects means that most contemporary British TV passes me by.

I'm thankful for this thead and other reviews that took one for the Team. You are all doing God's work.

Having watched all 3 episodes, I thought it was bloody awful. Episode 3 in particular was dire.

Need to check out the Fox version when that’s on.

What a pile of absolute crap; and boring with it. Probably the worst thing I've seen on TV of late, and clearly not a cheap production either; I'm annoyed not just that I wasted 3 hours of my life, but we pay for this stuff and there would have been 101 better things they could have spent the money on. I can't think of a single redeeming feature. And far too much posturing on politics, race, imperialism, gays, feminism - jeez it was politically correct bullst bingo, and so blatant it just got in the way of whatever feeble plot there was. With the budget and cast they had they could have produced a stunning programme faithful to the book. Or come up with something totally new and original. But this was utter, utter tripe.

Didn't watch it. Was going to do so on iPlayer.

Perversely I'm actually more temped to do so because the reviews on here are so bad.

I need to see for myself just how bad it is, if that makes sense.

Call it morbid curiousity.
Don't waste your time, Episode 1 showed a bit of promise as a build up. The rest, utter drivel.

It baffles me how they managed to get some of those actors to sign up for it, did they run out of money somewhere along the line and decide to just wing it?

It was a philosophical and hopeful ending.
The green shoot was a symbol that things would return to normal. It was also symbolic of the heroines new found sexual freedom.
