I had no idea this had been released first outside the UK (how does that grab you, license payers?)

Well, it's fair to say the IMDB reviews are not exactly glowing: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8001226/reviews?ref_=...

So what you're saying is that I really, really need to lower my expectations?
Yes. It wasn't as good as the 1953 or 2005 versions. Worth watching on a rainy day if nothing better on but not worth the hype (imo)

fking LOL. Wow. It's either people jumping on the one upsmanship to write as much negativity as possible OR it truly is a stinker.

How dare Fox and StudioCanal produce a show and not show it on the BBC first! Shocking.

It truly is a stinker. We gave up after episode 1 (of 2).

Some interesting reviews in there and some from people with not many reviews or review history on films I would not go near (I didn't read them all).

Still going to watch it and make my mind up.

I thought the same......but it really is st.

Effects for the tripods are good, sparse scenes with them in unfortunately

Understood. Lower expectations then.
I do like Alien 3 though, and Alien 4 and all the Jurassic films boxedin

Though I did re watch Dark Star many years after the first watch and wondered why I thought it was funny.

They are more outraged that a married man lives with a single woman than pesky aliens have invaded planet earth.
It really is a mess.
I loved Downton Abbey by the way, even though it was silly.

Guilt on BBC 2 is good if anybody has missed the first two episodes, well worth catching up.

Cock and balls frown

Was looking forward to seeing this.

Am I imagining this or was there yet another version set it the correct time period that was never released?

The fact this is divided into 3 parts on the BBC may help with swallowing the pill .
Lucky WOTW is out of copyright so eventually someone will do a decent adaption as normally its a struggle to get permission like with tolkien stuff.
Tbh within the first chapter of the actual book you can see this was a difficult thing to adapt for the bbc and was
obviously held back till after all the rememberance mumbo jumbo.
