Its our Guy so it saved the day. Otherwise a bit desperate.
Cant think of anything more dumb that recreating the steve mcqueen jump he didn't even do somewhere near the spot it was filmed.
What struck me was what a jolly jape it all was being a pow. Camping it up all day ,sports and half naked posing about.
Was a tough existence...
All a bit of a slap in the face to those in camps being murdered really. I dont think it would play that well to that crowd.
Yeah it must have been great living on little more than starvation rations when the Red Cross parcels stopped getting through .
I don’t suppose the inmates thought it was much of a “jolly jape” during the death march in the winter of 1945 when the inmates were made to march towards Germany to stop them being liberated by the Russians-many pow’s perished -some from the cold ,some from beatings or even being shot by the guards if they couldn’t keep up.

Nothing I've ever read suggests that the camps were anything but hardship, particularly towards the end of the war. Suggestions of POWs sitting out a cushy number are a bit insulting.
Extremely insulting as far as I’m concerned.

One British soldier's account of being a PoW in Europe for 3.5 years. Worth a read.

Very matter of fact which makes it even more horrific.

Why didn't McQueen do the jump? Was it safety considerations, or was he otherwise engaged in beating up his wife and taking drugs?
I remember reading that, of all the Hollywood stars who dabbled in motorsport, James Garner, Gene Hackman and, of course, Paul Newman were quicker drivers.

They said it was down to insurance. Usually with these things you dont want the star to do injury themselves and cause delays (and cost) when filming.
I think they mentioned that he wanted to, though.

McQueen was a better bike rider than race car driver......although he was no slouch behind the wheel.

He wanted to do the jump, but the film insurance people scuppered that idea, although, according to his ex-wife Neile, he did do the jump out of shot of the cameras when Bud was setting it all up before the film take, which is likely, given how close the two of them were. Despite a TR6 not being the idea vehicle for such a task, it wasn't really any more dangerous than what Bud and Steve were doing with Triumphs out in the California desert most weekends, or indeed a year later in East Germany on the ISDT.

y uncle who was a PoW in the far East is unlikely to have shared your views.
Not my view but anyway I believe the Far East camps were a special case.
Agreed, and I've amended my reply to read "those views".

I do like a Guy Martin program but this is a bit long for what it is, isn't it? I put it on 4OD last night while waiting for the election coverage to start and over an hour later he still hadn't jumped over the bloody fence.

I read TR6 and immediately thought...car! wobble Didn't realise it was also the type number of the bike.
