America - The Motion Picture
I’m not sure what I’ve just watched.
Some funny bits. Some bits that I didn’t get. Childish in the extreme but with plenty of gore.
Not one to watch if you’re looking for highbrow entertainment.
6 London bus AT-AT’s out of 10 George Washington’s.
I watched this last night and as you say it’s pretty mad. Lots of references to other films etc. I’m not sure what I’ve just watched.

We probably watch more foreign series than English language ones and only ever watch them with original audio and subtitles.
I detest dubbed audio. Utterly incongruous with the characters.
Agree completely... I enjoy all the foreign stuff.. also nice insight into their way of life, places off the beaten track etc. I detest dubbed audio. Utterly incongruous with the characters.

indeed - way of life and attitude. As an example, it strikes me that in Western films the 'goodie' can, pretty much, be counted on to survive, this seems to be very much not the case in Chinese films (for example) where the hero frequently sacrifices himself for his colleagues or 'the greater good'
Way back in the day I saw one of the earliest screenings of House of Flying Daggers - I think we saw it pre-Cannes. At the end where it was getting into all the 'heroic sacrifice' and 'people getting mortally wounded but making one last heroic effort' we all started to laugh at how stupid it was getting. Not that the concept is bad but it was laid on with a shovel.Personally I find that story wise Chinese cinema is a poor cousin compared to what comes from Korea and other nearby countries. It's just a bit too simplistic.

The Chinese stuff is 'party approved' - self sacrifice is all.You are correct - other east Asian stuff is better
The Rational Life
Set in Shanghai. 34 year old corporate lawyer who is being bullied at work and nagged by her mother to get married. Then she takes on a new assistant in his early 20s. It is a bit drawn out but I found it an interesting insight into issues facing people in China trying to get onto and climb the corporate ladder - as well as many issues facing women, with the pressure to settle down and have children.
I thought it interesting that the lead actress is actually older in real life (40) than the age of her character. Normally they do the opposite. Not that one should judge the program on this basis but she is also stunningly beautiful (for any age nevertheless 40).
If you can give it some leeway for Chinese idiosyncrasies then well worth watching.
