I'm no expert on Classical but I would imagine that some Opera would include politcal messages certainly Gilbert and Sullivan "Operetta" like HMS Pinafore are political satire.
It's comic opera. Not an operetta, and it pokes fun at lots of topics. However racism isn't one of them.Rumblestripe said:
Jazz, no protest songs? John Coltrane - Alabama, Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit, Gil Scott-Heron - The Revolution Will Not Be Televised
That's three tracks out of hundreds of thousands. I quite like Coltrane BTW, the vast canon of his work has nothing whatsoever to do with political messages. Billie Holliday didn't write Strange Fruit and Gil Scott Heron was more of a poet than a musician, a forerunner of rap, if you call that music Rumblestripe said:
Folk? Really? Bob Dylan? Woody Guthrie? Pete Seeger?
You've named three out of, again, hundreds of thousands. I know the worlds a small place... but honestly it's not that small!Rumblestripe said:
Rock? Come on man... Dylan again! Rolling Stones - Undercover of the Night, Beatles - Revolution, Creedence - Fortunate Son, Sex Pistols - God Save The Queen!
I'll refer you to the answer above about folk.Rumblestripe said:
Soul? Marvin Gaye - What's Going On, Edwin Starr - War, Sam Cooke - A Change Is Gonna Come
Well done, four songs What's that? There's only a few more anyway? Rumblestripe said:
You're not confused fella, you just don't know much music.
A tad more than you by the looks of it.You said "...not jazz, not folk (although I've heard some) not rock, not even dance music" It took me about 30 seconds to come up with those quick answers to your "nots" I don't have time to sit and type out a comprehensive list of every protest song ever written. There are thousands across just about every "genre" you care to think of.

I absolutely hate it when singers/rappers use their 15 minutes of air time to promote political agendas.
That has pretty much been the point of songs since time immemorial.Rumblestripe said:

And there are hundreds of thousands more, perhaps millions in some genres, of every other type of song. As I said. Incidentally you lost any credibilty when you added Dylan in the 'rock' category. Internet horseplay aside, that's just an insult to rock music. LaurasOtherHalf said:
The huge girl in the skimpy outfit (showing my age but I can't recall her name but know the songs from telly) started off good but her lack of cardio let her down half way though-she was out of breath and no wonder. Not sure if her backing dancers came from the local type 2 diabetes support group either.

Bring Me The Horizon was robbed.
I think they are terrible now, almost pop music. I really liked their early stuff, like Alligator Blood, can't listen to them now though.
Plus, apparently BMTH have tamed some their stuff because Ollie fked his voice so much with their early stuff.
That said, they did do the concert I would have most wanted to go, their Albert Hall gig with the massive orchestra, the video's of that on youtube are excellent.

I thought Dave was passionate, but st and I like Stormzy. I'm sure there is some basis for his rant, but compared to what it was like in the 70s/80s, he hasn't a clue.
He also gave a shout to prisoners. They're there for a reason.
What you mean like Dave's brothers? One doing bird for fraud one doing 18 years for murder? He also gave a shout to prisoners. They're there for a reason.
Yeah big up scum in jail. fking pricks.
Dave is passionate against known criminals that have ruined or blighted people's lives. I'll make my own judgement on that alone. Take race out of it.

I quite enjoyed the show overall - easy watching. Dave's anti-white people performance was st, and Stormzy wasn't much better - although as a "person" (i.e. what you see when he's on chat shows etc.) I quite like him.

He spent half of it eulogising white people.
