I'm just not particularly interested in mixing humour and politics. As you've guessed, most political comedians are on the other side of the spectrum from me, but I'm not sure I'd find a right wing comedian any more enjoyable.

Political satire in a more traditional sense (of mocking the politician I suppose) I can still appreciate but reducing complex issues to a comedy routine only seems to work for people who like their ideas simplistic.

As an example, I found everything about Corbyn hilarious. The outcome of his attempts to please both wings of the Left (eg nuclear subs with no missiles) was a satirist's dream. But I'm not sure I'd find someone mocking his beliefs and principles funny, however much I disagree with them.

But as far as the dull cliche thing, well it is really isn't it? It's not like Newman is the first.

Celebrities have every right to spout their opinions on everything, but I have every right to treat their opinions with the respect they deserve.

It's rare to encounter much nuance in such cases, let's put it like that.
Mocking power is an important social function, back to court jesters and further.
You may not like the reductive nature of the arguments used, which is a fair point, but it does not remove their ability to speak truth to power.

Sometimes it is not the complex argument which makes the point, it is the reduction to its essentials which cuts through.

She's still around. Does a bit of radio and was on one of those travelogues where older celebs go to places.

Cheryl Baker used to frequently appear on various TV shows, but according to the newspapers she's broke and can't pay the tax man....

Most of her earnings would be Bucks Fizz reunion tours, cruise ship cabaret and a panto season, none of which have happened. There will be a few of contemporaries in the same boat id expect.

She has had the income, so why didn't she put aside 40% to pay the future tax bill?

Cheryl Baker's real name is Rita Crudgington. I still think that's funny.

I have never understood that either. You only have to pay tax on money you have already had.

All that story says to me is "I kept spending, thinking I'd keep earning". Maybe sell her big house and move to a smaller one.

Isn't that the same with all personalities? The trick being to make sure you spend slightly less than you earn so you have enough when it all stops. So many fail to do this, not just personalities, sports people too.

Living, perhaps? HMG haven't been particularly generous to the self employed and contractors.

well the return she will be facing on Jan 31st is for earnings upto April 2020 - so she earned that money / taxable income - pre pandemic... its not exactly like its a surprise when you've been in the industry as long as she has.

Not everyone can afford to put aside 40% and save enough in addition to live for an indefinite amount of time with zero income due to a global pandemic. The tax bill probably wasn't a surprise, but a global pandemic that wiped out earnings in the entertainment industry with no government support probably was. It's entirely possible that she had the money set aside to pay HMRC, as she would have had to every other year, but in the ensuing ten months of zero income has had to use that money to pay other essential bills. There will be many other people in this situation, not just the celebrities that get written about in the press.

No sympathy here. You earn it, you keep some aside ready for your bill.
