Visually, Fallout looks impressive, although having a female lead these days doesn’t give me much confidence. Hopefully she’s not just another unlikable, invincible, Mary Sue girl boss, who is good at everything because vagina. One of the writers co-wrote Captain Marvel, so that’s not a good portent.
And to be honest it's based on a RPG series where women do just as much action stuff as men and fight in the military etc..., having only men be good at fighting wouldn't fit in with the series lore.

People have mentioned Westworld and that worked in season 1 with its female characters and then just went to cr*p.

I think pacing might be difficult. RPGs let you just level up and become better at lockpicking/fighting instantly. That won't wash in TV (unless they Scott Pilgrim it) and showing months of character growth isn't really possible when every episode needs to be interesting.

It wasn't really in jest, it would be better if she starts out weak and gets better....
In (at least) one of the articles it describes her as being naive and idealistic, having drunk all the VaultTec Kool-Aid available, so it's hardly likely that she is going to emerge from the Vault as a superhero. That's never been the narrative of the Fallout games because it is an RPG and you always start out so weak that even a Radroach presents a combat challenge.glazbagun said:
Man, I want to break out the OG games now. Do they still run on modern PC's? I never completed Fallout 2, always got stuck inside the oil rig. Or Fallout 1 where you'd get blocked in a room by one of your teammates standing in the doorway and you'd have to kill them to get out.
Yes. They all run under modern Windows. They are often in sales. I bought them for pennies once then got them again for free in an offer. If it is possible to transfer ownership of one of those to you then I am happy to do so.

I actually burned the images of my old installers to an old HD years ago (back when a CD seemed like a lot of storage!) I'll see if it still works next weekend.
You may fall afoul of DRM. If they rely on Windows Live then Microsoft turned off those servers years ago. I ended up buying Crisis again (albeit for only a few quid) in order to play it again despite owning an expensive steelbook version bought new.Top tip: always re-buy from gog.com if possible when in this situation as they are DRM-free
Also, when games that you already own come up as an Epic Games freebie, grab them anyway. This doubles your chance of being able to revisit the game 10 years down the line.
I just checked and I appear to have a DVD "white label" edition from GSP consisting of Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout:Tactics whose system specs are "WinXP or Vista". I don't see any mention of Windows Live on it.
I also appear to own it on Epic, which would have been a freebie.
I'm happy to send you the DVD if you want/need it, glazbagun

Old Fallout games have no DRM.

If it doesn't work, Steam keys (trusted site, I use them a lot) for a little as 40p.

After the trailer I am quietly looking forward to this. They really seem to have paid attention to the world building and aesthetic of the games, which is great. However, I am wary of that as well. I am not one of these people who will only be happy with word-for-word transcription to screen. That seldom works and things do need tweaking and do need some interpretation to get them to work in a different medium. So yeah I just hope they're not sticking rigidly to the games at the expense of actually doing a good story.
From what I gather, it looks like there will be 3 story lines to follow: Vault Dweller, A ghoul bounty hunter and a Brotherhood of Steel soldier. I think that will keep things interesting hopefully.
I love Fallout. I think in the New Year I am going to buy a Steam Deck so I can play them all again.

My understanding is that it's set in the universe of the games but even later in time than any of them, and therefore unlikely to be a simple remake of any one game plotwise. From what I gather, it looks like there will be 3 story lines to follow: Vault Dweller, A ghoul bounty hunter and a Brotherhood of Steel soldier. I just hope they dispense with the idea that nobody will have cleared away 200 year-old skeletons and detritus, because that always annoyed me. Humans aren't like that .

Not necessarily. Westworld started great, but turned into a dumpster fire and got cancelled early. I’ve only watched season one of the Boys and that was decent. Apparently season 2 got a bit woke though.
