Fantastic series but whoever sold the idea to a production company must have been a genius, the idea of a comedy set in a bomb disposal unit in Afghanistan can't work well on paper. I didn't think series 3 with the other captain was as good though.
You could say the same about a Sitcom in a army medical camp during the Korean war or one set within the French resistance.

There are limits but what matters most is the characters and the writing.

'The Rookie'

It's not taxing on t e brain, or philosophical, or anything of that ilk, but it is enjoyable fare, more akin to TJ Hooker, or other 80's stuff, and Nathan Fillian is the same guy he was in Firefly, and Castle.

Easy fun viewing.
Half way through Season 2 at the moment, decent series. Always liked Fillion, having been a fan of Firefly and then enjoying Castle, although as with too many US series, Castle went on a bit too long. shame Firefly didn't get that chance.

Thinking of which, Joss Whedon's other series, Dollhouse, was pretty good, but sadly only lasted 2 seasons. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dollhouse_(TV_series...

True. Always amuses me that MASH lasted longer than the Korean war biggrin

I thought Dollhouse was excellent. Although it didn't last long, at least it had an ending.

A did anyone watch The Almighty Johnsons? A show from NZ about a family who are direct descendants of the Norse gods. I really liked, but no one else seems to have heard of it.

I found this on late night TV some time ago and really enjoyed it.

Let The Right One In - the TV series, very good.

Something similar called 'Ragnarok' about a young lad who discovers he is Thor.

It's pretty good, to be honest.

Mr Inbetween is fantastic, and hardly anyone seems to have heard of it. Though it's already cropped up in this thread a bit

I'm currently half way through the Yorkshire TV series 'The Sandbaggers' on dvd, it ran from 1978 to 1980 with twenty episodes and despite being largely studio bound it's very watchable and very well written. Shot on video tape with some location filming thrown in, it's proper old fashioned cold war stuff and the casting is spot on...

What little location filming there is was mostly shot around Leeds, which stood in for the eastern block scenes(!), while the 'S.I.S.' headquarters was in Saville Row, London, a few doors down from the Beatles Apple Corps offices.

I've also got 'Bulman' to watch, the '80s spin off from the 1978 series 'Strangers' with Don Henderson as unconventional copper George Bulman...

One series that I've been looking out for on streaming is going to be on BBC in the new year, Our Flag Means Death. Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby pirates series.

I remember watching Bulman in period.

A couple of TV comedies that I loved & frequently get blank looks when I mention them are Black Books and Early Doors.

I got 1 and a ½ episodes in before I went 'nah'.

It's a lot like 'Plebs'.

Black Books was brilliant. I ignored it for years for some reason, then got the box set.

Green Wing - some really funny stuff in this.

The Returned - the first series was great, the second wasn't quite as good.

Glitch, an Australian drama about a small town where people return from the dead. They literally crawl out of their graves, seemly healthy and cured of whatever injury or illness that killed them.
It is on Netflix, so I’m not sure if it counts as obscure.

One of the best first episodes of any show.

Diminishing returns as the story progresses in the later seasons (I wasnt convinced by where they took the story) but the first season is absolutely excellent.

Strong concept well executed.

Weird. Did originally post this as ‘The Returned’? I’m sure that was mentioned here yesterday. AKA Les Revenants AKA Glitch.

Agree with this. Was hooked when it was first released. But tired in the later series.

Les Revenants/ The Returned has similarities to Glitch but it's coincidental.
