Interesting review, thanks for posting that. I saw it on first release in the West End with my dad and uncle and it seemed very up to date and modern at the time, even though it was actually shot in 1979. The scene where Hoskins slashes Derek Thompson's throat with the broken bottle gave some of the audience sitting around us quite a shock, the lady sitting right behind us actually screamed! Francis Monkman's soundtrack is superb by the way.

Still a nine meat hooks out of ten Series 2 Jag XJ6s for me wink
I've not watched it in a while either but the last scene is what stayed with me; a true masterclass in non verbal acting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ldZUQFr_9k

I appreciate you sharing that, it very much feels like a film of the time and I find it really interesting to hear views from people who went to see things when they were new.

One thing I found very interesting watching it today was the massive difference in society/culture.

There are a couple of scenes I found, I wouldn't say uncomfortable more just a bit of an "oh" moment where there are some pretty racist views on display as the "norm". A bit of language in a scene where Hoskins is talking to the bent copper and then the whole section where they go to Brixton. I'm someone who feels art should be left as is and not altered, it should reflect the time it was made in, but I still found it surprising to see such casual racism front and centre.

As a counterpoint to that you have Hoskins's whole monologue at the end (and mentioned in a few other places in the film) about how England was now in the "common market", part of the EU, becoming the "capital of Europe". Such a contrast to the last few years it was fascinating seeing it presented as such.

As they say, how times have changed!

Oh and you're right about the soundtrack, excellent.

Yeah it's a stunning box set, there are people trying to get £120+ for this on ebay currently from overseas pre-orders which is nuts. It'll surely get a wider release outside Japan given it's success.

Road House (2024)

Was expecting this to be a terrible remake tbh, but it was actually ok. They’ve wokified the provisional characters but apart from the poor cgi speedboat crashes it kept me watching throughout.

It's just so good. Esp when everyone is going on about sodding AI. Oscar Isaac is so well cast, and that Domnhall went on to be Thomas MacGregor in Peter Rabbit really is something. he's not going to be Bond, but he is under rated.

8/10.

It’s an outstanding film. I was lucky enough to see it at the cinema (the Curzon in London IIRC) at its release and it has stayed with me. Worth repeated viewings.

Fun fact about Ex Machina is the house it was filmed in is a holiday let, albeit an upmarket one.

Roadhouse 2024

I was actually looking forward to this. I really enjoy the cheesy original despite its flaws. This remake is absolutely awful. It's one of those made for TV films. I don't mind Jake as an actor, and he's done some good movies, but he has no charisma in this. It's like he knew it was going to be rubbish and didn't bother with any sort of effort. I ended up playing Candy Crush 30 minutes in and looked up for the fight scenes. Conner Mcgregor would do well in the WWE but not in movies.

I'd give it a higher than it deserves 4 out of 10 just for some of the fight scenes. If you have an urge to watch, I'd recommend just digging the original out instead.

That's disappointing - some of the reviews seemed pretty good (Telegraph gave it 4 stars for eg) and was looking forward to it.

Ah well, another dodgy remake I guess.

I haven’t watched this for several years - my daughter wanted to watch it given it stars Ryan Gosling…
The film stars Ryan Gosling as an unnamed Hollywood stunt driver who moonlights as a getaway driver. He quickly grows fond of his neighbor, Irene (Carey Mulligan), and her young son, Benicio. When her debt-ridden husband, Standard (Oscar Isaac), is released from prison, the two men take part in what turns out to be a botched million-dollar heist that endangers the lives of everyone involved. The film co-stars Bryan Cranston, Christina Hendricks, Ron Perlman, and Albert Brooks.

I haven’t seen the film but have seen CM looking like he’s on meth doing an interview. He’s either legit messed up or he’s faking it to promote the movie.

Please don't take my word for it, you might like it. I think a poster above really enjoyed it. We're all different but I was left very disappointed as I was one of the few who was really looking forward to seeing it.

Just as an aside, I wish everyone could take this commendable attitude. So often people say something is "rubbish" like it is some kind of empirical fact, whereas what they mean is "I didn't like it". thumbup

A must watch if you aren't aware what death and destruction Putin is causing in Ukraine.
Heartbreaking.

My movie nerd friend says he's excited about the following:

Civil War
The Fall guy
Late night with the the Devil
Three Body Problem.

Civil War is by Alex Garland, and I like a lot of his previous stuff, so that is on my list.
I've seen a trailer for The Fall Guy starring Ryan Gosling, and remember the original TV series so will give it a watch.
No idea about the other two.
I was reading about Three Body Problem and I'm looking forward to watching this one... Sci Fi genre.

They're on my list too. I'm off for a week after today. I wasn't bothered with Immaculate, the Sydney Sweeney nun horror film, but I've seen some very good reviews of it today, so it's got onto my list along with Ghostbusters, Kung Fu Panda and Godzilla x Kong. Should keep me busy hehe

She really enjoyed it !
The music is brilliant, nice 80’s style soundtrack, atmospheric- very much reminded me of Jan Hammer Miami Vice

Ronin next for her
