Do you know what parts required cutting?
The rat submersion I believe. If the tales are true the rat probably had a slightly more fun time filming than the actors did in their scenes.

If the rat wasn't harmed in the filming then I don't see why that scene had to be cut. Also, the whole point was to demonstrate to Bud that he'd be fiiiine in the experimental dive suit that he had no training in the use and operation of.
Apols my reply didnt submit before you askdd the same questionJoshSm said:

Yep definatly. the behind the scenes interviews show the horrific working conditions for the crew and actors. Aparently the main tank was not heated so there were hot tubs for people to use to warm up after filming wrapped up for the day or between sessions.Cotty said:

Didn't Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio almost drown? Or was that Kate Winslett in Titantic? James Cameron seems to have a track record here. edit: My mistake. She had to act the drowning scene again and again. It was Kate Winslett who actually almost drowned.

edit2: Turns out it was Ed Harris who almost drowned. Kate Winslett merely contracted pneumonia.

She didn't almost drown, but had to act like she almost drowned. Many takes later she was so upset with Cameron demanding retake after retake as she lay there with her chest exposed, freezing wet with Ed Harris slapping her she screamed at him and stormed off the set IIRC. It's a brilliant movie.popeyewhite said:

Yes, I realised that and edited my post. But you got in there before me. Clockwork Cupcake said:

In Abyss James Cameron nearly drowned. He ran out of oxygen and had to surface with complications edit: My mistake. She had to act the drowning scene again and again. It was Kate Winslett who actually almost drowned.

Has to be the director's cut version though. I loved the idea of the film, the subject matter I find fascinating, but the cinematic cut always seemed to be missing something. Tried the longer version and wow: transformed.
If you're into historical epics I highly recommend this version. It's an incredible watch.

So, it was due to a change in UK law that meant they could not get a rating, Over the years, the scene has been included on some formats and was once (and only once) shown on Channel 4 before being edited out and never shown again. The specific bit of legislation that scene falls foul of is the Cinematograph Films (Animals) Act, specifically, it is a criminal offence to exhibit in the UK any film sequence that has been “organised or directed in such a way as to involve the cruel infliction of pain or terror on any animal or the cruel goading of any animal to fury. So it doesn't matter if the rat is unharmed, it's the fact it would have been terrified. I have to say, whilst I don't agree with cruelty to animals in any sense it's mind blowing that this tech is real and that scene specifically really does make you believe that Ed Harris really uses it at the end (along with however they shot those scenes which was brilliant).
So whilst I did think it was a bit "toys out of pram" that Cameron wouldn't edit the scene to not show it, having seen it I kind of agree that it needs to be included.

Did you watch it on physical media I assume? I couldn't find the director's cut streaming anywhere. Never seen it but don't want to bother with the theatrical cut. And yet we still see a water buffalo actually slaughtered for real in Apocalypse Now. Madness! (edit: Or perhaps it is a case that if it were re-released on a new format then it too would fall foul of the same issue)

Indeed. I agree with you. So whilst I did think it was a bit "toys out of pram" that Cameron wouldn't edit the scene to not show it, having seen it I kind of agree that it needs to be included.
Maybe it could be edited so the scene is retained but you don't see the actual immersion? Or some CGI trickery employed or something. But I guess if James Cameron is being a dick about it then he has ultimate power of veto.
