Evil Dead 2 was a groovy sequel parody remake. I much prefer it to the original.

I've been excited to see this since the trailer which sort of came out of nowhere. Dev Patel's directorial debut where he's written and stars in an action/revenge film set in India.

This was an excellent watch, very often when you see a lot of hype around a movie it can be hard for it to live up to expectations (apologies to those who watched Arrival and didn't like it!) but for me this exceeded them. From a technical standpoint, the best way I can describe this film is "confident". Rarely does a first time writer/director have such a clear vision they're able to execute so well on screen, especially when entering a somewhat crowded genre like this. At times, the film reminded me of Drive with it's mix of short sharp cuts, use of natural light and beautiful, colourful imagery. It's soundtrack (just like Drive's) is eclectic to say the least but works brilliantly. Patel directs action like a pro and isn't afraid of taking risks with the camera work. He's also an accomplished action star in his own right (turns out he's a black belt in Taekwondo) and this film had me wondering why we've not seen more of him in these roles.

The film does suffer from some pacing issues in the second third of the film however this is easily overlooked when we get into the last third and the film steps up a gear. Patel said that with this film he didn't just want to make another action film, he wanted to make an action film with a soul and in this respect he's absolutely succeeded. It's so beautifully a film from his world and vision but also appealing to a wider audience that you can't help but feel delighted he was able to pull it off.

7.5/10
Just got back from watching this and it was brilliant. Loved every minute of it and the bit I have bolded above is spot on, he nailed it.

Spectacular camera work which looked great on Odeon's iSense 4k screen.

I just don’t like talking dogs….(they ruined UP for me!) and poor acting! The only thing good about it was the cars, that said I could only last 15 minutes, it might have been Formula E after that!

The dog doesn't talk! biggrin You hear what the dog thinks so how else would you do that without someone speaking his thoughts?

What sort of manky cat do you have and how do you find the Leaf? winkbiggrin

Ford vs Ferrari

Loved the cars and thought in general the performances were great. The story it seems had only a very loose connection to the truth, the Fast and Furious type gear changes and racing footage and the cars all over the track should annoy anyone. However, I still enjoyed it overall.

I enjoyed it too. I just have to ignore the way directors rarely seem able to make driving look realistic. It's a bit like some of the scenes in war films (Dunkirk!) so I tell myself it's a film not a documentary and try and ignore it.

Just watched AND PAID FOR…the first 15 minutes. JEEZ what a steaming pile of ste! A couple of nice cars and that’s it! Having to listen to Costner as a dog proved far too much for me and the Mrs. On yes…. and the acting was atrocious!

2/10
I agree with this, I thought it was bloody awful.

Not sure why gear changes and such would annoy anyone it is simply dramatic licence.

Fight scenes that have people knocked clean off their feet do not bother me either.

Sure sure, it was an accident. Could have happened to anybody. You were walking along, tripped, slipped on the floor and accidentally stuck your dick in my wife.

Sorry Mrs H it just isn't my week!

Bloody love that film - probably helped that it came out when I was 12, so swearing, wise cracks and a very nice 7 Series were all very appealing at that age.

Oh and Halle Berry.
"If we drive any faster we'll go back in time!" imho an underappreciated line in an underappreciated film

Even she thought it was spectacular drivel.

Tried to watch Mojave

Stellar cast, totally unclear opening you have to work out, there is a 4-door convertible Jag which doesn't appear on IMCDB. That's possibly the best bit.

6/10 the film, 10/10 the car.

Beverly Hills Cop 2

I think someone said earlier in the thread that they'd watched this and it wasn't as good as they remembered. After watching the first one recently I thought I'd work through them, seems I've been confusing 2 with 3 in my head! This is a carbon copy of 1 almost, with not quite as good bad guys and a distinct drop in humour. Plot doesn't seem to make sense, everyone has forgotten their characters so there's no tension as they all go along with Axel no matter what.

I've just started 3 and it's a damn sight better than that but it really does scream cash in.

I and II were good. III not so much..

II was a caricature of I in my view, totally tongue in cheek.

Superb.

OK, stupid question maybe. Would I have to have seen previous 'modern' Godzilla films to enjoy; and I know that's a personal thing, the new Godzilla v Kong movie? Mrs and I have started the Odeon monthly pass thing and have decided to go and see films we wouldn't normally watch on small screen so the Godzilla one seems to fill that brief...but I wanna know what's going on!!

You could go in without seeing the others, but watching Godzilla v Kong would help know some of the pesky humans who are back in Godzilla x Kong, if you're bothered about them hehe . Or for a quick catch-up without seeing the whole things you could watch the YouTube videos from something like Pitch Meeting or CinemaWins.

For some movies it is better to just skip watching the movie part and move straight on to the Pitch Meeting.

It's super-easy; barely an inconvenience. smile
