Films I watched this week (NO SPOILERS) (Vol 3)
Discussion
We watched News of the world just now, SWMBO usually dislikes westerns but after watching ‘The Unforgiven’ on 4k Bluray and now this i have been slowly winning her over.
I kinda like Western travelling films more then most so it’s a 8/10 from me. Tom Hanks plays himself but the young girl puts in a good performance, considering she doesn’t speak english.

If you want to immerse her in a fantastic western, watch "once upon a time in the west". Atmosphere overload from start to finish, it's one of the greatest films ever made IMHO.I kinda like Western travelling films more then most so it’s a 8/10 from me. Nomadland (2021)
Like Craig David trying to break America again, this one is clearly another Francis McDormand bid for Oscar glory. In truth, given McDormand is worth nearly $30m (and her husband, Joel Coen of the Coen brothers probably nearer to $60m), watching their film about extreme poverty living out of an RV after the 2008 recession seems (ahem) a little contrived.
So that said it also almost seems a bit like they both watched ‘The Lady in a Van’ with Maggie Smith one night and then decided to take the idea out on the real roads of the American West. As long as royalties were paid I’m sure it’s all well and good.
Cinematography was obviously superb and a predictable high point of the film. Many shots of Francis gazing into desert sunsets but with some nice touches such as using real life road nomads like Linda May and swankie add realism to the very raw (and at times very difficult to watch) filmmaking, which also features McDormand crapping into a bucket.
Recent output in the art house genre such as ‘The Lighthouse’ is really far better in my view and it is fairly obvious what the overall aim of this film is. It’s also far too long.
7/10.

Tenet.
Wow what a great film.
One minor quibble, what in the name of fk was going on.
I’m glad it wasn’t just me I definitely think it was a movie for the cinema. Too many distractions at home when I was losing interest because I didn’t know what the hell was happening. Wow what a great film.

Wind River (2017) on Prime. A rookie FBI agent is called to the brutal murder of a young woman on a Native American reserve in Wyoming. Lots of unexpected twists in a good tale, well told. 9/10
Fantastic B movie. I say B movie because of slow plot and no major stars...bags of atmosphere though and a very satisfying end.generationx said:
Random one here:
ABBA: The Movie
Plot? Who cares. Set-ups and pay-offs? WTF? This is a 70s time capsule and and a record of one of pop’s true icons on tour in Australia in 1977.
10/10
If anyone says they don’t like ABBA it’s just they haven’t heard the right song yet.
The chap that played their Manager IIRC went on Lou Carpenter in Neighbours for a good few years.ABBA: The Movie

Class Action Park
Excellent look back at the Action Park waterpark in New Jersey in the 1980s. Some stuff that would be unbelievable had their not been archive footage, there is a story about why kids were coming off of one of the slides with lacerations that is now forever burned into my mind!
