The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

I knew pretty much nothing about this film but thought I'd give it a go.

Long, quite low-key, and quite slow, but kept me engaged the whole way through. Masterfully put together IMHO. 9/10.
This is all i need to know . . .
Cinematography: Roger Deakins.

Also what service did you watch this on?

eta - appears to be available on Amazon although not free with Prime

I found it incredibly dull, but may rematch it now I'm all growed up...

I think it's a bit of a masterpiece but it is slow paced.

I binged a bit of 90's last night with

Reservoir Dogs & Killing Zoe

Come to the conclusion that Tarintino's first is his best.... by a country mile. He became far too self indulgent after it.

Killing Zoe is still as good as I remember also. The saints go marching in. Highly recommended if you haven't seen it.

Savage (Netflix)

Emotional, but somehow a bit superficial, violent and thought-provoking.

Not a recent film, but I watched Passengers in Amazon prime last night.
It got pretty poor reviews when it came out but I don't know why as I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a big budget sci-fi with the usual plot holes aplenty, but it looks great, had some interesting moral dilemmas and has Jennifer Lawrence in a bikini. What's not to like?
I enjoyed it too. There's something so freaky about being on a ship with no one else around (one imagines).
In the original script when they reboot the computer they accidentally kill everyone else on board. Now that would have left them isolated.

I also liked the idea of it starting with Jennifer Lawrence waking up, then introducing the early part of the story in flashback to show the 'why' much later so the audience finds out more or less when she does. That would have made it properly dark. Maybe one day someone will create an edit.

It had the potential to be a very different film, it's not bad but it could have been much better.
Interesting, thanks.

Thanks for the heads up though exactly what I was expecting.

Talking of desperate, Eddie Murphy is releasing Coming 2 America shortly so can you watch that for me and let me know if it's as horrendous as it sounds.
Bruce doesn't even look desperate in his films these days. He doesn't even try to look like he wants to be there - he has adopted that nonchalant bored look he first showed in RED where, to be fair, it kind of worked. Since then though, he just looks bored. At least when you see Stallone or Arnie give it a go these days, they look like they're enjoying themselves.

Keanu looks like he's just hitting his stride - he's on fire with the John Wick series (although I thought the latest Bill & Ted did him no favours - maybe I've grown up finally). Tom Cruise rarely puts a foot wrong whereas Will Smith appears to have lost his grip on the production process and storytelling.

Now Eddie Murphy... he does look desperate for adulation however sometimes he can pull it off. I will watch it for you and report back. wink
Interim status update: tonight is the second night I've had a go at this film. I started where I left off last time and managed about 25 mins again, same as last time.

It's not very good and doesn't hold my attention for long.

Adam.

RD is great, raw but with minimal budget and so some cinematic limitations. A great film.

With the same ethos and a decent budget, he created his true masterpiece Pulp Fiction, probably in my top 3 films, maybe even top

Coming 2 America
Was looking forward to this as I loved the first one.

Hardly funny, rehashes most of the old jokes.
Plays as fan service mainly to see how many returning characters you can spot.

Woke message included for modern times.

Dumb plot and unbelievable how they wove the Akeem having a son angle into it.

The only good thing about it was seeing the beautiful Shari Headley who plays Lisa back on screen, she looked amazing for her age.

They shouldn't have bothered.

I Care a Lot

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9893250/

Rosamund Pike as "A crooked legal guardian who drains the savings of her elderly wards meets her match when a woman she tries to swindle turns out to be more than she first appears"

With Peter Dinklage as a volatile gangster.

Really enjoyed this, lots of plot twists and some great dark comedy moments. Ending was a real surprise too.

Would defo recommend.

The best role he has had in the past two decades is as a talking donkey.

You would probably have to go back to Bowfinger for the last good live action role.
He was pretty good in My Name Is Dolomite along with Wesley Snipes who was surprisingly good as well after not seeing him in much lately.
A film I really enjoyed and yes, excellent performance by both.

The Mauritanian

Watched this over the weekend and I was gripped the whole way through. It's terrifying what governments can and will do in the name of "national security".

8/10 for me

The Foreigner, Netflix

I know it's been discussed not so long ago on this thread, was the trigger for me (& OH) to watch it

Really, really enjoyed it; thought it was well shot, acting good; J Chan a bit more reserved than in other of his films, but worked well for this first 'serious' role I've seen him in.

Thoroughly recommend

Sentinelle
New film currently in Netflix's top 10.

Stars the lovely Olga Kurylenko as a soldier on tour, after witnessing a child suicide bomber which messes with her head she returns home to France to be with her mum and sis and join the French Sentinelles (anti-terriorst squad), however she suffers from PTSD and is hooked on drugs now.

On a night out with her sis while Olga lezzies it up with some random girl she's pulled, her sis goes home with the son of a Mark Zuckerberg type billionaire.
She's found the next morning raped and lying on a beach and now I'm a coma.

Since the offender is so powerful and can't be touched by the police, Olga decides to put her learned skills into action and get revenge on the culprits.

If you are expecting some sort of Taken/John Wick type film like I was then sorry to disappoint.

This film was horrible, plot and story was silly.
The fight scenes were really bad since Olga is wafer thin but can toss a few bad guys around no sweat.

All the characters were terrible and the film was just plain boring, lucky it was only an 1hr and 20mins long.

3/10*, *2 points for the romp scene.

Kick Ass 2 free on Prime. Though I liked the first I found this sequel a struggle. It is slow and painful at first as Kick Ass seeks a new team while Hit Girl promises her uncle to give up crime fighting for high school. It does get going in the end, but isn’t as good as the first. 6/10.

Yes, I agree. The original didn't take itself very seriously and was a hoot as a result, but the sequel seems to take itself really quite seriously, and is the lesser for it. Also the violence in the original film was fairly slapstick and hence easy to stomach, but in the sequel it feels more realistic and, again, is the lesser for it. And, finally, the interlude of "Hot Girl goes to High School" just seemed utterly incongruous.
