The Foreigner

Blokes only surviving daughter gets killed in an IRA bombing, he goes looking for culprits, everyone underestimates the 60 year old Chinese immigrant until they discover he's a former special forces Vietnam veteran.
...............
Thanks Rizzo for the heads up.
I really enjoyed it, even to say one of the best movies I've seen this year.
Pierce Brosnan was a very convincing IRA agent ( modelled on who I wonder ? ) and Jackie Chan was outstanding.
9 explosions / 10.

The Shape of Water

Guillermo del Toro‘s dream-like sci-fi love story, set in the early 60s with a pinch of paranoia, espionage and outdated attitude thrown in for added authenticity. For me an absolute masterpiece and, for once, an Academy Award Best Picture that I agree with. The baddy (Michael Shannon) is gloriously evil and deranged, and the rest of the cast are similarly fantastic.

Don’t be put off by any of the above: it’s truly brilliant.

It Follows (2014)

I took the recommendation from the horror thread. Standard teen movie fare, fairly idiotic premise but was nicely done.
Every review I saw and everyone I asked about it said it was great. I watched it and didn't get what they were seeing. Incase anyone hasn't seen it, I'll spoiler this So there's a thing that's sexually transmitted, and once you have it you can't get away because it walks after you. Hmmm. a) walk faster or move somewhere else. b) Take one for the team and shag someone you don't like to get it away from you.

Another horror film that had great reviews from media and mates that I really didn't like was The Babadook. I might have said this before already, but when the kid the monster is after is a really annoying little st, I'm not going to care about him and I'll want the monster to get him, when the monster is a version of Papa Lazarou, I'm not going to take it seriously at all.

A Marmite film - I thought it was terrible but then I was raised on Stingray which had better lead and supporting actors:

Yeah I'm with you on Babadook. Dreadful film and not remotely scary.

Loving, a film about an interracial couple who challenged the essentially apartheid laws of the state of Virginia after being forced to leave their homes for being married. Very sympathetically told with none of the usual sensationalism and few cliches other than the usual comedy parody deep south sheriff. Slow paced, but very watchable and a true story about two ordinary people who tried to change the American system, incredibly as late as 1967!

Cube

1998 film included in Amazon Prime.

Think Crystal Maze with added sci-fi... but then also add in cheap American dialogue and over-wrought psychology and emotion.

7.2 on IMDB but, for me, barely five escapes from ten rooms. Might appeal more to others who enjoy psych-fi type themes.

His House.

Decent low budget UK film. I really enjoyed it with good main cast and a couple of goosebump moments. If you like horror it’s worth a watch 7/10.

The Oxford Murders

Elijah Wood and John Hurt and a series of murders in Oxford. Well shot in places and then interspersed with real amateur filming.

Interesting story line which made it worth watching to the end, but is is any good or not? I am not sure.

At first I thought a solid 6 out of 10 and an easy watch, but extra bonus points for Leonor Watling, which bumps it up to a 7.

Surprisingly another spot of a US spec Capri in this one - second in a week after watching Elm St 3.
Surprisingly common as I've just seen a Mercury Capri II in a CHiPs episode on Forces TV.

White boy rick

Loosely based on the storey of a Detroit kid becoming an FBI and Detroit narcotics police department informant at the age of 14. How he infiltrated some of the worst drug gangs in the city.

Well filmed. With some really good acting. So much so I had a bit of an internet dive on his true life.

A solid 7-8 out of 10.

The Invisible Man

Well I have to say that was stunningly good and with bits of real suspense and tension...

... (I mean....well there are times when you could honestly say “I didn’t see THAT coming”.....obviously!)

Didn’t like the lead actress, and I have difficulty watching anything with Michael Dorman since he was so good in Patriot, plus, although the effects were pretty good, there were some action scenes which were a bit annoying.... so I don’t think I can call it perfect.

A big nod to the original book in many ways, and it had a lot of the feel for the way the original unfolded, plus wonderful scene early on in the hospital with a patient apparently head to foot in bandages....wicked!

I would, however, give it eight spooky jump inducing turns out of ten things going bump in the night....

Finally got around to watching the original Halloween, haven't ever seen it before. Quite dated, and tame by modern standards, laughable script at times but not bad in terms of pacing and tension. I don't think it stands up as well as some reviews say though.

I went to the cinema on Saturday to see The Burnt Orange Heresy . It's a crime thriller starring Claes Bang, Elizabeth Debicki, Donald Sutherland and rather surprisingly Mick Jagger. It's well worth seeing and rolls along at a decent pace. 7/10.

Not sure if it's been mentioned so far but went to see Saint Maud at the cinema last week.

Described by some as the horror film of the year .. well what can I say, there was precious little horror in it and a very predictable plot.

Good performance from Jennifer Ehle though.

Looks like that one's been missed on IMCDB,

I should be watching CHipS - the volume of '70's & '80's onscreen chod's appealing; probably haven't seen an episode in 40 odd years.

Quite hilarious. Ponch's new brown bullnose Trans Am gets stolen by a team of women.
In a subsequent chase, using a 4x4, (in which the Capri appears, parked up) you see the TA on a collision course towards the rear of a car. There is obviously a big ramp because when the car "hits" and takes off, there is no damage to the nose but on landing, it flips and there is then an obvious flammable liquid, surface fire and explosion, for added kudos...
