American Pickle 2020

Had meant to watch this last week but it turns out my air conditioning was too loud..

Lightweight comedy with Seth Rogan, finally a new film I actually enjoyed. Except what happened to the last half hour? Seth plays both parts well, so easy to follow you can just switch your brain off and it is still actually quite watchable.

I really wanted to see what happened to their Pickle business in the end, it ended way too soon.

The Heist of the Century

Argentinian subtitled film on Sky. Brilliant film, and don't let the subtitles put you off as it's one of those films where you quickly get used to them. Great characters, actors and based on a true story..

Yeah, watched that last week and thought it was excellent.

Recorded Young Frankenstein mainly for my wife and found it really hard to sit through. Terribly dated and really unfunny.

Tom Jones 1963

A delicious romp through Georgian England starring Albert Finney, Susannah York and a not to be forgotten Hugh Griffiths who played and supposedly was completely pi55ed securing a best actor nomination.

Based on a 1749 novel by Henry Fielding, it is the story of a ba5tard child born into a wealthy family and events lead him through adventures with lots of ladies to eventually secure his rightful place in life. A pantomime of mistaken identities, intentions and indiscretion. Bloody brilliant.

The script has some outstanding lines and one scene where the hero eats oysters before bedding his lady friend is one never to be forgotten. All in the best possible taste of course.

8 heaving bosums / 10 elegant and some not so elegant ladies.

Taxi. Classic 1998 film written by Luc Besson, in French with subtitles, is free on Prime. A young taxi driver who would fit well on here has to drive a police officer around Marseilles on the trail of bank robbers to get his license back. It's very good - fast car chases through the city, decent characters and dialogue, quite funny in parts, and Marion Cotillard. 8/10

[i]At the height of the Cold War, a Soviet spacecraft crash lands after a mission gone awry, leaving the commander as its only survivor. After a renowned Russian psychologist is brought in to evaluate the commander's mental state, it becomes clear that something dangerous may have come back to Earth with him[/b]

thought it was a decent Russian attempt at horror/sci-fi
Watched that this week, not amazing but certainly seen worse. Thought the first half was better, as it drip-fed whats actually going on, then the 2nd half had quite a few "BUT YOU WOULNT DO THAT!!!" shout-at-screen moments.

Ava

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8784956/

Ava is a deadly assassin who works for a black ops organization, traveling the globe specializing in high profile hits. When a job goes dangerously wrong she is forced to fight for her own survival

Sounds familiar and indeed it is, classic femme fatale type action film with Jessica Chastain and John Malkovich, still enjoyed it though.

The Bedford Incident 1965

An US destroyer patrolling the Arctic encounters a Russian sub and the tension builds as war games commence. The destroyer forces the sub to go underwater and with a limited air supply cannot charge batteries and limited time before surfacing is essential. Thats when things go awry.

Richard Widmark is the destroyer captain and you begin to realise that he is mentally unstable and a very dangerous adversary. In my view his best part ever. Sharing the bridge is Eric Portman playing an ex U-boat commander bringing his expertise to the cold war games. To build the tension, Sidney Poitier plays a news correspondent dropped onto the ship by helicopter and he reinforces the obvious by asking questions on what is just going on.

The black and white film makes the atmosphere in the iceberg littered patrol area extra chilling.

Another 8 ASROCs / 10 nuclear torpedoes.

Top movie. Ready to go to briefing shortly.
The start around the Toby jug is especially poignant, and when the grazing cows make space for the four Wright Cyclone engines fire up and the grass blows back still makes the hairs on my neck stand.
That's Saturday night sorted.

The sequel to the brilliant Zombieland. Not as bad as I had expected. Worth a watch for a few brain out hours.

Slow West
Rented on via Apple. Missed this film with Fassbender when it originally came out. Quirky take on a western, doesn’t take itself too seriously, most enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours.

I See You
Rented on Prime. First you think it’s a horror, then a thriller, then you think it’s straightforward, then... Keep watching all the way through and don’t be tempted to give up. Low budget but enjoyable.
