The Coesn brothers remade it in 2004. I love The Coens but it was one of their weakest efforts.

Beverly Hills Cop III

I mentioned I was working my way through them, weirdly I think I've only ever seen this on TV where they do that odd thing of editing them down to be shown at 6pm cutting all the swearing or dubbing it with the obvious bits.

I've read that Murphy had major issue on this with depression, deliberately playing it straight etc and it shows. He's just checked out for the whole film, the supporting cast are awful, the plot makes no sense. Worse than the second by some margin and that was pretty bland.

I don't have much hope for 4 and fear it going the same route as Bad Boys for Life but let's see.

Think I'd rather switch to "48 hrs" for my 80s cop film TV fix than rewatch BHC 3 , which is awful.

Have you travelled back in time to tell us about BHC 4? rofl I'll skip it when it gets released in that case wink

I can't remember if I've seen 48 hrs but I see it's on Paramount + so might give it a whirl to remind myself. Only reason for going back to BHC 1-3 was the trailer for the new one I saw, wanted to remind myself of them. Won't be watching 2 or 3 again for a very long time.....

It is funny how all 3 of them were shown on TV so much though having been edited to within an inch of their life. As a kid I only ever remember seeing 2 and 3 on TV before the watershed with all the harsh language edited out. It literally made me lol when Axel refers to Brigitte Nielsen as "a big bh" several times rofl Caught me off guard.

Doh, 3 was so bad I'd already written off 4 lol.

The Birthday Cake

I had low expectations for this which were duly met. Despite Val Kilmer as Darth, Ewan McGregor as a narrating priest (talk about a WTF moment), and Vincent Pastore among others, it was hard to follow and remarkably dull.

2/10.

Perhaps it's the lower profile but I find Casey Affleck to be the better brother, esp in a tragedy, he deserved the Oscar he got for that. Brilliant story. Brilliant performances.

9/10 is probably on the low side.

Gave Predator 2 a re-watch

I like the fact it wasn't just a re-tread of the original and they changed things up by setting it in a city. Has a number of good action set pieces as well. The effects hold up really well for a pre CGI movie. IMO it also has the best fictional gang name in movie history biggrin

I don't think it quite measures up to the original, and I am not sure Danny Glover really convinces as an action lead, he was better in his lethal weapon style role IMO. Overall though a worthy sequel IMO.

Yeah I liked the switch to the urban setting and whilst Glover was no where near Arnie in the action stakes I think this was another smart move to not draw direct parallels with the original.

one of my favourite bits of Prey was the call back to the end of Predator 2. Kind of mirrored the Alien easter egg at the end of Pred 2, proper fan service

48 hrs

After someone mentioned the comparisons with Beverly Hills Cop I wanted to give this ago, never seen it before I don't think. It's a great film, very 80s action heavy but in all the right ways. I'd say this is easily as good as the first BHC and a very solid entry to 80s action/odd couple type films. Some well known faces in the cast which is always fun to see. Murphy plays it a bit straighter here but Nolte is full on loose canon cop.

A special shout out to the composer James Horner. I recognised his steel drums from Commando immediately, he was a brilliant composer and has created some of my favourite scores (he did a lot for Star Trek amongst other films). Not often mentioned in the same breath as Hans Zimmer or John Williams but his work is up there for sure and he has such a unique style.

So good I'm now watching Another 48 hrs smile

Civil War.

Intense, emotional, thought provoking, chilling. Bloody loved it. Just shows was a brilliant director can do with a relatively small budget (compared to the massive budget super hero nonsense).

Abigail

From the same people as Ready Or Not, if you liked that you'll like this smile . Plot is the reverse of RoN, instead of the girl trapped in a house with the bad guys, it's the bad guys (they're all criminals) trapped in a house with the girl. Alisha Weir (Matilda, Wicked Little Letters) is great as the innocent little girl and when st goes down. It's an 18 for lots of gore, and it's great fun.

The spectacular rise and fall of the Blackberry phone. Very cleverly told and absolutely riveting.

Late Night with the Devil (2023)

Is rare indeed to get good low budget horror these days but certainly acts I and II work rather nicely, before the final act lets it down slightly. Either way a good watch and the Exorcist girl is suitably unnerving. 7/10.

I just finished watching it but probably didn't like it as much as you did though.

It's still a decent watch but it seemed very short without much meat in the plot, the CGI was rubbish especially when the demon fully takes over the girl, the lightning effects were really bad as was it's final form.

It seemed to have a load of production logos at the start, I felt like the Peter Griffin cinema bit from Family Guy.

The BBC original Ghostwatch did it a lot better.

6/10

I did watch Immaculate earlier with Sydney Sweeney playing a American nun who moves to a Italian convent, however things aren't as perfect for her as it first seems.

The less you know about this film before watching it will probably make you enjoy it more.
It does start off a bit slow but then once the premise reveals itself, things start to ramp up.
Sure some bits have been ripped off from some more famous horror classics but it was still enjoyable especially the ending.

Slightly better than LNWTD in my opinion.

It's intersting how Murphy appears slim and hungry in the first one with Nolte the star, but in the second one, Nolte looks the slim, hungry one as Murpy's star has risen and he's the draw....

Rebel Moon Part 2

If you didn't die from boredom watching the first one, this'll do the job.

Has all the right ingredients, seems well made, soul suckingly dull.

On the upside by the time it's finished you'll probably have forgotten watching it. Or be past caring.

0/10 - a talent wasting insult to the world, find some drying paint to watch instead.

Just had the DVD pop though the letterbox, I remember this being a cracking thriller. only 6.5 on IMDB
"A woman framed for her husband's murder suspects he is still alive; as she has already been tried for the crime, she can't be re-prosecuted if she finds and kills him". Ashley Judd and Tommy Lee Jones
