Car Throttle needs to ditch Alex. Jack and Ethan make a good double team, and they don't need the mighty midget just making snarky comments all the time, and destroying things. Their podcasts were awful, the whole Mike Brewer bit was cringeworthy, I can't remember the last time I saw a CT and thought "Yes I must make time to watch that", instead of "yeah that'll kill 20 mins".
That MR2 thing just seemed like a whole lot of effort and expense for something that's pretty useless.
Agreed, plus to see him destroy all the old parts he removed for no reason was madness, they could have sold or given away the old parts.
That won't show off his arms though. He is so very, very punchable.

I love Dan, I really do, love his videos, if I saw him 'out in the wild' I'd definitely go running up to him and asking for selfies and autographs, I know he'd love that.

But I digress, the only criticism I could throw at him would be the intro to his vids, it's too long, it's like opening the corner of all your xmas presents on xmas eve so you know what you've got, it ruins the surprise!

Tease me more Dan, I don't want the money shots in the first 10 seconds!

A good algorithm moves with the audience. I think many people are realising that once you're past a certain age, watching daily or near daily content is impossible timewise, and you get bored pretty quickly too. Youtube is evolving, much like the audience is.

All the channels I actually watch (non are automotive) have much slower release schedules, or even no schedule at all, and these are some of the biggest channels on youtube, eg kurzgesagt, mkdhb, wendover productions etc.
Hmmm......just checked out Kurzgesagt and Wendover Productions as I'd never heard of them before but now subscribed so thanks for the mention.

Done MKDHB before but too much tech overload for me. biggrin

With regard to the decline in views, I think there are a number of factors some of which are general trends and some that are channel-specific. That explains why certain channels have been more affected than others. I’d be reluctant to dismiss it as just being down to a change of algorithm.

The months spent in lockdown probably led to over-consumption and highlighted the formulaic nature of some of the content. Even before that there were signs that growth was slowing or had stopped.

Increased ads and promotions could also play a part in putting people off viewing content. I can understand the temptation to compensate for declining numbers but you've got to be careful to not over-commercialise the content.

There’s also more competition these days.

Some of the tech channels that I follow have also been experiencing a similar drop-off, so I don’t think it’s just this sector.

Regarding the algorithm, I did see the host of one tech channel saying there was now less time to make or break a video.

Authenticity (at least perceived) is important to me.

I feel that with Car Throttle quite a few of the videos seem like they are more of a means to fulfill the bullet points of a sponsor's brief / get a message out than show stuff they would be doing for 'fun'.

WhistlinDiesel as a contrast can provide re-watchable spectacle and it's very much to his own agenda.

Just been doing a bit of Socialblade research for someone, looking at the last month's views for the automotive channels. Makes for interesting reading if you're into that sort of thing:

Shmee150 + Shmuseum - 7m
DDE - 13.5m
Hoovie's Garage - 4.5m
Stradman - 9.5m
Cletus McFarland - 22m
Doug DeMuro - 20.5m
SoL - 550k
Seen Through Glass - 840k
WhistlinDiesel - 32m

What's most interesting is that all of them bar WhistlinDiesel have seen views decline in the last few months, so there's definitely a trend. General concensus is that it's the algorithm changing to promote other types of content, when it has been heavily pushing automotive for a long time.

This can be seen though, there have been variousl trends that i've noticed being offered to me without previously watching it. There was all the stupid 'prank' stuff, then the DIY and small house stuff, then lots more automotive stuff, it all just goes in cycles.

Must be very worrying if YT is your primary source of income though, I'm not sure how well i'd cope not knowing what my future income would be especially if there were large finance payments involved.

WhistinDiesel's numbers are just staggering though, given US CPM's he must be bringing in well over $100k per month.
I think people like a bit of a change of scenery.

The only channel I religiously watch is tommyfyeah, operating a Nissan Skyline/ JDM restoration shop and does dumb stuff with mates, who's also recently moved into a new location plus hired a camera guy and his views are up by 40%. Gained 6-7k subs since the 'big move' a month ago. Small channel, still, but even the engagement under uploaded videos is also up noticeably and he's got a core and very stable fanbase who's got notifications on.

Shmee's videos have been literally the same since the beginning. He's got a stash of the same ancient camcorders that he buys off ebay, says the same sentences, etc. - minimum effort, maximum quantity. No wonder people wonder if there's a viewership burnout happening. It's not like he needs to fix a broken thing, just modify it to freshen things up. Same with DeMuro, but that guy's got another significant, publicly known business venture to lean on. Can't comment on others as I don't watch them.

OCD is a serious mental illness, not a skillset you learn.

I have had burnout for a while and haven't watched any automotive stuff for ages until last night when I watched Shmee take is Taycan to Germany but in general not watched any of them.
Got a Taycan arriving very soon so I watched that with genuine interest and I thought it was a decent video.

Sorry, I was just using the term as an informal adjective as opposed to making a psychiatric diagnosis or seeking to offend. I imagine we both knew that though.

There's a balance in my viewing between presenters I like and topics I'm interested in. In your sort of situation, choosing or about to get a new car, I watch lots of stuff about that car. I love Harry, but I only watch if his topic has some sort of interest for me.

Shmee majors on multi-million pound cars - there can't be too many viewers about to take delivery of those!

Also just watched JayEmm’s 991.2 GT3 manual review.

Really enjoyed it. As a 997 GT3 CS owner, I obviously have a bias, but nonetheless agree with a lot of the points he makes in favour of the newer car. Setup on 997’s makes an enormous difference but, even so, i do get that they area bit less involving when just pooling around.

Only disagreement is on sound. Yes 9,000 rpm on the DFI engine sounds epic, but the old ‘bag of bolts’ gruffness of a Mezger pushing beyond 7,000 rpm to the redline is visceral, wild. Anyone who’d not want to have both in their garage after a mega lottery win misses the point. All IMHO.

A Mezger at full pelt is certainly a fine thing, the induction noise on a 997.2 RS is sensational.

They just need a box that's as easy to row as an S2000, but in my experience they were always reluctant to be rushed which knackers you when all the power is hidden so high

I thought that it was a decent video too but one thing that did bug me was that crack in the windscreen. C’mon Tim, a quick call to the insurance, pay the minimal excess and get a new screen. I’d imagine him to have a thoroughly comprehensive policy which will cover this without issue. There’s no excuse Tim, you’ve got staff who look after the fleet and tend to any issue while you’re away.

Can someone explain the latest thumbnail trend for holding up a giant invisible fish?

Shmee started it now everyone seems to be at it.

I think she does actually suffer from proper OCD to a degree, she’s said as much in the past.

I wish we in the uk could enter to win that TT, it’ll be better than when it was new!

For goodness sake, how many times do I need to reiterate the following:

YOU, ARE, GIVING, YOUR, PRECIOUS, TIME, TO, THESE, PEOPLE.

SPEND, IT, WISELY.

The only channels worth their salt are;

Harry, Garage & Farm
Pistonheads
Carfection
SCD
Petrolicious
Tyrrell's Garage
Goodwood
Late Brake Show
Autocar (sometimes)
EVO (sometimes)

WE, ARE, ONLY, HERE, ON, EARTH, FOR, A, FLEETING, MOMENT.

THINK ON.
IN. YOUR. OPINION.

I don't watch any of those as they're all boring to me.

No, exactly because he is a moron and I don't want to give him views, or publicity.
