YouTube Premium
Discussion
I use this and its great! It's also free, so you can try it now; and then if you still want to get premium just uninstall it. https://getadblock.com/

Can you change your preferences to not have Youtube curate suggestions for you (I honestly don't know)
You probably can, but you end up with totally bizarre adverts that are even more annoying. If you watch some videos where YouTube doesn't allow selective ads based on user preferences, you will see random the selections are. Adverts for online flower delivery services voiced in weird text-to-speech software or 10 minute adverts about why you should invest in a mining company in Ethiopia aren't uncommon you're trying to watch videos about the history and mechanics of firearms.I have noticed in the last few months that YouTube have made their ads even more obtrusive and obnoxious. They are more numerous, longer and harder to skip and they interrupt videos more frequently too. I think I'll eventually go to the premium plan to get away from them. I watch YouTube probably more than my next nearest consumption point for programs and videos by a huge amount. For every hour I watch on Netflix I probably watch 10 or more on YouTube.

How? If you're watching the videos ad free, you're not paying them for the content.
from the people who dont use ad blocker/brand deals.Even if 10% of the audience don't do it and watch the adverts, that's still say 10p out of the £1 they're getting. Hardly fair, or reasonable, to expect someone who's creating content for you to enjoy free to have to accept that. Is it?

I totally agree, I'm not in a position to be monetised and I have very low production costs so I'm not overly fussed but there are a lot of people/ channels spending money on videos and it's only right they reap the rewards.Even if 10% of the audience don't do it and watch the adverts, that's still say 10p out of the £1 they're getting. It's a similar argument on how musicians generate an income from iTunes or Spotify.

You can get YT premium really cheaply if you use a VPN whilst setting up your account

Which works out at £1.13 a month.
I used a previous deal (and had to use a chinese address) and it costs me £1.33 a month.

I have premium for a negligible sum. Worth it for removing the ads.
Until recently I was content with using NewPipe/SmartTubeNext apps, but decided to get premium for the included YT Music.
£1.70-ish for a family plan.

At the risk of a slight thread derail, what are you lot all actually watching no YouTube to justify your spend?
I watch loads of stuff on Netflix & Prime, but YouTube is just the occasional video on how to carry out a particular element of bike maintenance or similar for me. Am I missing something big?

There's so much car related stuff to watch...Harry Metcalf, F1, JayEmm, Engineering Explained, Top Gear, Fifth Gear, Tyre Reviews, Carfection, Pistonheads, Tyrell's workshop, Car Throttle, Petrolicious, Reg Local....the list just goes on an on.
I am another seriously considering a subscription to get rid of the annoying ads. Does a subscription result in more revenue for the content creators?

This was my first thought too.I watch loads of stuff on Netflix & Prime, but YouTube is just the occasional video on how to carry out a particular element of bike maintenance or similar for me. Am I missing something big?
Also the people who watch it more than Netflix or Prime? What are you watching? I probably spend less than 20 minutes a month on there!

I have the Family plan for £17.99 a month as I mostly use YouTube for streaming (my parents scrounge off me!). I can't stand adverts so I wouldn't be able to watch YouTube without the premium plan. I also have Amazon Prime which i use mostly for the delivery aspect but it also gives access to Prime video.
I don't use a TV (so no TV licence), stopped my Netflix earlier this year also don't have a landline, , so its works out financially for me.

As I’m thinking of joining the Indian foreign legion, how does one actually go about doing this? I have express vpn so setting location isn’t a problem. It’s more the credit card that is registered to the Uk and not actually knowing what the postcode or, indeed address for mumbai or Lucknow actually is...
I just used a shop address in India (my mistake on first post I said China) then paid with a Visa card, it just worked. There's a how to on the hukd link I posted a few comments down.

Google "fake address mumbai"...I used my Revolut card
I've got Spotify already, but signed up for the free YT premium trial. I like it.
The downloadable music is great, so I can listen to say, a live concert, when walking the dog. Background play is very handy.
Also the downloadable videos is good for saving videos to watch later.
I've also linked the music to my Sonos so can play all the live videos etc through that.
I'd consider cancelling Spotify for it, but I'd miss the podcasts..

As far as I’m concerned YT gives you access to hundreds of thousands of creators - many of whom have turned their career into making YouTube content therefore put a lot of effort into to make outstanding content equaling that of TV production. But you get to choose what content and creators you want to watch based on your preferences.
I have subs to tech channels, car/automotive channels, how-to channels, documentaries, home Reno, vloggers who live in other countries that I’m interested in and much more.
I used to use YT sparingly too but for the last 3-4 years it is the primary reason that I do not watch any traditional TV any more.
