Clarkson’s Farm

I haven't seen that ep yet but it was covered earlier in the thread. Capital costs weren't included as they aren't normally anyway. Also "income" doesn't equal profit.
One of his points too was what would farmers do without subsidies. Definately a very eye opening and informative series.FiF said:
I would have to rewatch the episodes but I'm not sure they applied the full capital costs. Iirc he spent 80odd k at the farm equipment sale having already spent 50(?) on that bloody Lambo. Then there were plenty of other capital costs e.g. farm shop building and plenty of other things that could count as capital. Though in the final summing up Charlie talked about 60 odd thousand as capital expenses and another 60odd k from operating costs. As said needs a rewatch as all from memory.
Essentially they were trying to make the point that without the mooted 82k subsidy a lot of effort for not much. Although worst year for farming is a perfectly valid point.
And why do farmers bother with sheep? I was only half paying attention when he discussed it but I think he said he only made a couple hundred quid for all of that disgusting effort to keep them. I put off watching, half expecting it to be all fake telly, there is undoubtedly some acting up for the camera but on the whole it’s very entertaining. I certainly know versions of all the characters in the show, the Kalebs and Geralds who were born capable, the clever academic and even the odd wealthy but hapless farmer with the hot wife.
Which character are you most like? I’d say I’m a little bit of all of them, I could certainly make myself incomprehensible to anyone not local to me.

Personally I'm glad that some people like to farm livestock, lamb chops etc, wool, lovely bit of shin beef, steaks etc, milk, cheeses, cream, but I'm being extremely selfish for various complicated reasons. The reality is that there are large areas of land where arable farming is just not economically nor practically possible. Even in areas where the geography looked at from a distance looks to be perfect for some form arable / horticulture will have areas where it's not sensible for various reasons, e.g. access, slopes too steep for the machinery, climate and so on. Therefore livestock farming makes sense, just another facet of diversification.
I'm beginning to think they've done some sneaky edits of Gerald's rambles. I think they've cut off the beginning of some words and sentences to make it more incomprehensible.
Often, when he's talking, the camera is on Clarkson. I suspect occasionally they've dropped in bits from different converations, too.

But you, being you, will always be looking for something negative and will - if necessary - invent some conspiracy to satisfy that mental urge of yours.Often, when he's talking, the camera is on Clarkson. I suspect occasionally they've dropped in bits from different converations, too.

Still creases me up when 'head of security' starts talking and Clarkson responds 'yes' everytime
Just wish the series went on longer

Watched five so far, eking out the others, very enjoyable. Thought I'd made out one of Gerald's words in the last one but it sounded like 'Manchester' so maybe not. Context is everything.
He seems to say 'Everton' in the same speech so maybe he was talking about footy. Around 3:30 in this bit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yv16434EO5c

I don't really understand sheep at all. They survive in places other animals can't, whether baking hot Australian semi deserts full of poisonous spiders or cold wet Scottish islands. Yet in a temperate climate with plenty to eat it's a struggle to keep them alive. Blackpuddin said:

I'd imagine that for weddings and funerals he puts his false teeth in, and suddenly becomes entirely legible to all.
There's no way Clarkson genuinely cannot understand him.

Mainly because it's the only thing you can do with much farmland. We certainly couldn't grow the crops JC was in the Peak District. In the 19th century my farm used to be able to grow hemp, and supplied the Royal Navy with rope from the nearby mill, but that's not allowed now. There may be an alternative soon of growing for carbon capture, but not enough details on the subsidies released yet. Certainly there's nothing you can grow here to make a profit on its own.Dr Jekyll said:

The pronounced regional accents do surprise me, I'd regarded that area as basically a suburb of Oxford.
I think at his age, and with his life, how he comes across on telly is about as high up in his desires as the crop just after harvest. The pronounced regional accents do surprise me, I'd regarded that area as basically a suburb of Oxford.
There's a practical side too. My old man never wore his dentures whilst working, as they'd fail out /get broken /etc. Helped that his job was such that speaking to other people who didn't know him hugely well was incredibly rare. Just like Gerald.
Amusing when Clarkson dropped supplies off, and Gerald's wife had a polished cut glass diction...
