Why do radio stations play the same songs repetitively?
Discussion
I'm subjected to Heart FM in the office since I started a secondment in February of this year. It is the only radio station the DAB can pick up for some reason and I have no say due to the owner of the radio always wanting her way.
Anyway, I've come to the conclusion that Heart must've had a fire or flood which has destroyed most of their music collection. So for the past four months they have constantly played the same songs over and over again and some on 3-4 times a day. Even the rare times they play a 90's track it always seems to be the same ones.
Drives me fg spare.

I had this psychological torture inflicted on me a few years back - Heart pretty much have 3 CD's - the latest Smash hits, then a greatest hits of the 90's, and a greatest hits of the 00's...
It doesn't help that a lot of stations are catering to the lowest common denominator (ie. morons).
Take your average "request hour" as an example. Despite everyone having instant access to numerous streaming services, you'll always get some tt phoning up the station asking for something which was played only a couple of hours ago, and almost certainly will be played again in a few hours.

Very rarely get any repeats on there and the tunes are great....but obviously a certain genre.
Really? Every time I switch PR on you can pretty much guarantee Freebird/Layla/Stairway To Heaven will be heard within the hour.Very rarely get any repeats on there and the tunes are great....but obviously a certain genre.

My theory is that absolutely no one ever sends in messages and requests to all these radio stations. They already know exactly what songs they’re going to play and when they’ll be on. They’ll just make up some message saying that Sheila from Doncaster has texted in to say happy birthday to her hubby Jim who’s working hard painting the spare bedroom. Jim, she loves you very much and says could we please please please play you some Michael Bolton. Of course we can Jim! Even though neither you nor Sheila actually exist.

I’m subjected to this utter utter utter tripe at work.Want to hear a Dua Lipa song? It’ll be along every hour so don’t worry. The same song.Harry Styles? we’ll cater for that too.In between a McDonald’s advert every 5 minutes or so or that one with the meerkats that people for some unknown reason find funny.I noted once they played 3 songs in half an hour and the rest of the time was taken up with adverts.
It’s not a station,it’s a rolling advertisement service.
I hate the bloody thing with a passion but more worrying is it appears to be a reflection on today’s society that people say they like it.
Hateful hateful “station”.

I couldn't have put it any better. There may be the odd track where I think "huh, not bad" but that is an extremely rare occurrence.
It’s basically an all day advert service interrupted by the odd “song”,albeit from a selection of no more than 10 “songs”.The so called artists I mentioned in my previous post had the same song played more than once a day and this went on for over 12 months. The same song. For over 12 months.
Depending where I am working I can turn the damn thing off so I don’t know what’s been playing the last couple of weeks but I did hear yesterday muffled talking for about 20 minutes with no music being played.I can only assume it was adverts.
If anyone can stomach it,I suggest having a listen but please don’t hate me for what it may do to you!
Forget various ways of torture if I was ever asked to reveal anything in another life;just being told I’d have this station played to me for a day and I’d spill the beans immediately.
Yes,it’s that bad.

Classic FM is total drivel, intended to sell moronic adverts, aimed squarely at people with the attention span of a goldfish and intellectual capacity of a baked potato.
Same stuff over and over and over and over again!!!!
It's like beige bathroom paint for the ears.
Generally they also only play snatches of things and then the adverts!!

I'm subjected to Heart and I find it just has no heart or soul...just generic rubbish which sadly the youngsters love.

Don't know why people listen to commercial radio. Between BBC stations, plus podcasts, plus the repeats of shows, plus all the music and mixes you can find on Youtube/the internet, what does commercial radio bring to anyone?
6 Music about justifies the licence fee on it's own IMO.
This is why I like Greatest Hits radio...very good DJ's, but with local news and traffic. I like listening to the radio because it's company when you're working at home alone...yes I appreciate that may sound weird to some, but I don't mind hearing another human voice between the tracks (as long as it's intelligent or witty conversation, and not some idiot interviewing an idiot...see Heart FM for details) . 6 Music about justifies the licence fee on it's own IMO.
What I don't want to hear is some screeching mad woman calling in because she's a winner OMG!!!!...which thank God GHR don't generally do too much, unlike Heart who do it all the time, and must be utter torture having to listen to!!
The adverts are annoying though...it's a shame Radio 2 have lost their way so badly...GHR is basically copying their winning format from about 5 years ago, and with all their old, but very talented and liked DJs.

Atlantic 252 (remember them?) Used to be shocking for repeating the same track multiple times in a day.
Crikey, that takes me back! Me and a mate used to listen to Atlantic 252 when we were working on a Westfield back in the 1990s. After about 90 minutes they would start repeating the tracks and we reckoned they just had a C90 on auto-reverse.
