Lewis Collins. Who was Bodie in the Professionals and in Who Dares Wins.
Also, famously, lost out on playing Bond due to being 'too aggressive' in his audition.
I heard he kept missing the hat stand in Moneypenny's office.

Peter Facinelli. I remember him being touted as the next Tom Cruise in the 90's.

Steven Bauer.

Good looking, good actor. Thought he was destined for better.

biglaugh That was a factor, but he kept calling her ‘Funnyfanny’
1982... So that must have gone to Roger Moore then, starting with Octopussy. scratchchin

Karl Urban. In several ensemble casts of big films so arguably has made it big, but rarely seen as the lead in other films.

I think a lot of people mentioned did make it pretty big!

Ben Chaplin, series one of game on was great. The potential of that was never fulfilled.

Walton Goggins has had some great roles recently, think his career has lifted off. Roles in 3 Tarantino movies is hardly unsuccessful. He's great in The Righteous Gemstones as well.

Im remember a young acter from Eastender had a major storyline with Martin Kemp. He was a great actor and didnt he quit acting due to all the attention he was getting?

Walton Goggins is the new Gary Oldman. Just quietly getting on with being utterly brilliant and playing some really great baddies, without being all red-carpety and tabloid-worthy about it.

Margo Martindale is another favourite of mine who isn't quite A-list. She appeared on my radar in Justified at the same time Goggins did. The two of them stole the show and far outshone Timothy Oliphant's lead.

Sadly died during the filming of The Deer Hunter, they had to film all his parts first. I seem to recall he was only in four films and they all got nominated for Academy Awards.
To add to the list

Richard Jordan - known for Logan's Run, Hunt for Red October
Alexander Goudinov - best known for Die Hard
Both sadly diseased

Coincidentally I recently watched a YouTube video on him that claimed every single movie he was in either won, or was nominated for, the best picture Oscar.

A great range and played very different characters. Probably one of the best examples of an actor who could have had a much longer, and even more illustrious career if he hadn't been taken so soon.

Five actually. Godfather Parts 1 & 2, The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon and The Deer Hunter, all nominated for Best Picture. Not a long list of credits but bloody hell, talk about quality over quantity.

Yep...he did just five films, every single one of which was nominated for best picture, and three of which won that award. Al Pacino speaks very highly of his craft. I have no doubt he would be considered one of the greats had he lived.

george peppard, not sure if he turned down roles he shouldn't have, or was " difficult" on set.
I remember a Wigan interview he did.
He came over as being on his high horse and slated a fellow actor on the A Team.

Many years later. Justin something or other did a “bring back the A team”. Special.

Actor after actor hinted that George was not the easiest to work with and that the draw for the show was not him. But a good wearing bloke who was not classically trained. (That apparently grounded George’s gears)
Didn't he and Mr T hate each other?

Anyway my nomination is Ed Harris. I've loved him in every movie of his I've seen.

Didn't De Niro pay for his healthcare or something as he wanted him in The Deer Hunter? Either way, hell of an actor and a hell of a resume.
