The last of us - HBO max (spoilers!)
Discussion
Loved ep2 just as much as the first and would echo many of the comments here.
I really enjoyed the intro and agree with whoever said it gave context to the ruined cities (from the bombing).
And on the city - and the environment in general - it just captures the game world so perfectly. The collapsed/leaning skyscrapers and vegetation growing.
Continuing to love the nods to the game. Few highlights for me in this ep:
- The Clickers sound and move EXACTLY as in the game
- The museum was brilliant and Joel sneaking around with Ellie behind him was great
- The view across the city with the gold dome in the distance - I swear it felt like I had just been prompted to click L3 to 'look'
Despite the closeness to the game it is also true that you don't need to have played the game though; it certainly stands up on its own, just with little bonuses for those that have played it.

I’m getting annoyed that I’m just not getting it like everyone else is. I wonder if helps to have played the game, I’d never even heard of it before seeing this thread. Aside from the hyper annoying immune girl, it doesn’t seem any different to any other zombie flick so I’m not sure what the big deal is. I’ll stick with it though in the hope that, for me, things improve. I’m just finding it a bit dull.

The Clickers were spot on! The reason they are so close to the game, is because the game had exceptional motion capture. If you haven't watched any there are loads of videos on YouTube showing you the motion capture cut scenes along side the finished product. The cutscenes and movements really were a theatre production - It's why the (Ps4 remaster, haven't played the proper remaster) game still looks decent enough today - because the motions are life like unlike other games where you have people rotating on the spot and looking like robots.

I think it probably does help. But the main distinguishing feature is the tone and the aesthetic. It predates girl with all the gifts I think. So the originality is perhaps of it’s time

It defo helps to have played the game, if you haven't then I suppose you're still very much in the settin the scene phase of the show, I'd expect things to ramp up in ep3. Haven't played the game but enjoying the series so far. Let's see how it progresses. Would rather enjoy it as it is than compare it to the source material, but I do consult a gamer friend after the episode who explains things whilst avoiding spoilers. Very well made, good attention to detail. Does anyone else scan derelict cars in post apocalyptic shows to make sure they're all from the correct pre-apocalyptic period?
As a non gamer I do see some things that stand out, for example their route of travel towards their destination is very much geared towards a game scenario rather than a "real life" choice of path...

'The Girl with all the Gifts' is so overlooked ... it's a fantastic film. I definitely felt that the whole 'brain controlling fungus takes over the population' plot was 'insprired' by TLoU when I first watched it.But the main distinguishing feature is the tone and the aesthetic. Turned off as soon as I realised it was zombie crap.
What's the obsession with such nonsense?
Alright I'll bite. How did you not know beforehand? What's the obsession with such nonsense?
Even if you're not a gamer it's pretty obvious what it's about.
I've never played TLOU but I know what the game is about.
