The last of us - HBO max (spoilers!)
Discussion
Never heard of the game and only just found this on Sky Atlantic. Not the worst thing ever but why does every drama these days have to be littered with effing and jeffing all the way through? Especially annoying is the girl who apparently has never been outside the wall who can’t say more than about four or five words without dropping a random f-word. Don’t know why, but it really annoys me, must be my age I guess!

Watched the first 5-10 mins or so. It looks good but when they almost immediately slipped in a reference to global warming that set the 'shovelling the writers agenda in' detector off a bit. Will sit down and watch it properly this evening as HBO (the main channel) generally make quality stuff.
Of course, only on PH
Anyway. Loved it. Great start IMO.

If I have a small gripe it's that it had a bit of the look and feel of The Walking Dead.
It is a post apocalyptic Zombie show, so unfortunately it’s going to have some similarities!Strangely, I didn’t enjoy the game, I only got a short way in and gave up, I think I’ll give it another shot

Thinking back I realise I did exactly the same. Played, got bored. Then couldn’t stop hearing about how amazing it was, started it again and completed it and was astounded. Strangely, I didn’t enjoy the game, I only got a short way in and gave up, I think I’ll give it another shot

Again, she's like that in the game, mostly because she's rather annoyed and confused about why she's being held captive etc. Also, yanno, zombie apocalypse n all, I think I'd be throwing F bombs around too.

Let's not dwell upon the quartz watch that needed a new spring...
I did notice that hahaha - £1 quartz movement. Acorn1 said:
Never played the game, watched ep1 last night.
I thought it was pretty good as zombie genre series go, like a grown up version of walking dead, which turned to utter garbage.
I hope this doesn't go the same way.
From what I read a while back they won’t milk it out - I can foresee 1-3 seasons max personally which will be perfect I thought it was pretty good as zombie genre series go, like a grown up version of walking dead, which turned to utter garbage.
I hope this doesn't go the same way.

to be fair walking dead was pretty much garbage from the outset.I thought it was pretty good as zombie genre series go, like a grown up version of walking dead, which turned to utter garbage.

I enjoyed it, for the most part. Off the back of the reviews I anticipated the moon on a stick. But as with most video games themselves, I've learnt to keep my expectations in check. I know this is blasphemy according to certain pockets of the internet, but I just can't gel with Bella Ramsey. It isn't the lack of similarity (although in an adaption, it does make sense to me to capture the general likeness) it's just that .. she isn't a great actress. It's like some sort of weird quasi parody version. It feels almost disingenuous. I think the casting is a million miles off with her - everybody else, sure.

I do tend to agree. They've ensured Joel looks like Joel but not done so with Ellie. As I've said already, this actress would have been perfect.WhisperingWasp said:

I do agree with the comments about the casting of Bella for the role…..but I’m not sure I could watch Sadie doing it, because every time she was on screen, in my head I’d start hearing Kate Bush. Played and enjoyed the games...but...was disappointed with the first episode.
It's like watching a TV show I've seen before bundled into the fact the zombie/outbreak show has been done to death on TV. The production values are great, Pedro does well (unlike Bella "Have I left the iron on?" Ramsey) and it certainly feels like TLOU universe.....but...I just felt myself drifting off to look at my phone.
Not sure what I expected, TBH, but I'll see how it pans out over the next few.
Very windy and rainy today, so had a look at YouTube recommendations and as a result of clicking the trailer for episode 2 I got this...
I thought I'd have a look to see if my recollection was ok and it has been on since.
Surprisingly watchable, and I obviously played a lot more of the game than I realised, as I'm many hours in and I'm still remembering bits!
Anyway, it's quite cool how someone edited the cut scenes and bits of gameplay together to make a very long movie... Would probably make a good TV show.

Finally watched the first episode over the weekend and was well impressed - they did a great job of expanding on the opening part of the game giving it a lot more background and making the events which are the opening scenes of the game, have a lot more impact.
Joel is more of a straight up 'hard man' than he was in the game which is a bit of a character shift. Liked Anna Torv - would hardly have recognised her or maybe have spent ages wracking my brains if I hadn't read beforehand that she was playing Tess.
If they can keep this standard up and concentrate on delivering drama and entertainment, this could be a winner.
