Lots of advertising around this, watched the first hour and it really reminds of an old movie https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080421/ Battle Beyond the Stars I used to watch as a kid. Exactly the same premise, farm person goes recruiting fighters to fight nasty overlords in space. I remember liking A Team at the time and seeing George Peppard die in the movie I was like noooooo lol

Anyway, looks like a straight up copy of that storyline so far but much more character building and special effects. Been good so far.

I quite liked this. A bit like Stars Wars I thought.

Looking forward to the next one!

Felt a bit like it was made from spare parts that were lying around and none of them really fitted properly.

Any original sci fi is welcome but I assume the longer cut will actually flesh some things out. People sort of turned up and we were expected to know who they were and love them dearly.

Battle Beyond the Stars is all heart compared to this.

Yes watched a bit more and people literally demonstrate their skill set then just happily sign up for no real apparent reason … aside from the rebel brother who I think his reasoning is sound

That was the weirdest bit. Some woman shows up and asks you to fight a totally pointless battle for a bunch of hicks that'll guarantee you'll be squashed flat. You cheerfully throw everything away and pile in.

At least in the Corman film most were either mercenaries, nutters or had an existing grudge and it was a whole planet.

It does turn into something considerably bigger as it goes along, but the opening pitch would need to be rather more compelling to get me out of my armchair.

It was a originally penned as a Star Wars movie but ended up as a Lucasfilm reject made into its own franchise.

Definitely borrows a lot from what has come before and very predictable with a weak story really but it is well put together. I enjoyed it enough to look forward to Part 2.

What a steaming turd of a "film". Wooden acting. No character development. No storyline to speak of. Early 2000s TV VFX. Star Wars fans will love it.

I enjoyed it but I noticed the character development lacked after the first couple of recruits. I have no doubt the extended Directors cut will address that.

One of his previous films Justice League was not great but his Directors cut version was 100 times better.

One review about this saying the storyline felt like it was generated by an AI, hit the nail on the head for me.. Lots of bits that felt like they were borrowed from other movies and a somewhat confusing storyline full of plot holes.

Waste of 2 hours imo.

What accent was Charlie Humman trying to portray?

I quite enjoyed it. Nailed virtually every SciFi film trope but that’s not always bad news.

In one of his interviews he was saying that this was the first time he felt he'd really nailed an accent.

My main beef with it is time and place rather than timbre, but I guess it does sound quite futuristic compared to Estuary English.

Maybe the Northern Irish will be first to take humanity to the edges of the galaxy.

Zac on the directors cut. "It's not an extended cut. It's almost a different film. Almost a different universe. " 45 - 60 minutes longer and R rated.

I don’t think I'll wait to see that instead, as it may not be released until just before part 2.

Well I liked it.

Slightly disjointed but then its a part one...

If it was a complete film it wouldn't make sense.

Jesus people must have low standards. I'm a huge Sci-Fi fan but this is just a steaming pile of turd.

Where do I start?

1. Horribly derivative plot. It's basically the Seven Samurai\Magnificent Seven set in space which might have been OK if done well but it isn't.
2. Awful Script
3. Very mediocre acting.
4. Poor characterisation and character development, characters just join the cause for no reason and aren't fleshed out in any way except for the main character and then even that isn't properly explained.
5. Mish mash of ideas stolen from pretty much every popular sci-fi movie, seemingly thrown at the wall at random to see if anything sticks (it doesn't).
6. Awful effects considering the amount of money thrown at it, honestly some of the special effects look like they could have been from a TV show made in the 90's.

I'm usually pretty forgiving when it comes to sci-fi but this was just terrible, I'm shocked Netflix actually released it. It's like a sci-fi B movie but without any of the charm or so bad it's good appeal of even those films.

Dear oh dear.

Well at least someone watched the same thing as me. Everyone else must have been watching something totally different!

Yep, a copy of Battle Beyond the Stars but people on foot rather than in distinctive spaceships.

Like the above, having watched it all now, just couldn't see how they could realistically gather all those people by just turning up and saying 'hey come join us' and everyone just goes along with it. It was always there in the background just niggling away. Maybe the directors cut fixes that, but why release something substandard and nonsensical from a storyline perspective in the first place, just release something that makes sense.

Googling reviews it gets on average 2.9 out of 5, with around 80% of votes going for either 1 or 5, so its a bit marmite!
