You all seem to be watching it, so Netflix thinks it's a smash hit and that they need to produce more of this tripe. Based on the first episode (I can't bring myself to call it a film) and the Critical Drinker's review where I saw more of the same crappy VFX on show I see absolutely no need to encourage Netflix to make more of the same by watching it.

Its obviously set itself up for another installment, as much as I love Sci-Fi I wont be watching the next one.
The only way to stop Netflix producing utter garbage like this is to literally not watch it and become a statistic.

If he has a competent writer, and the film suits his style, then he can produce a decent movie. Films he has any involvement in writing tend to be essentially garbage, though sometimes with some good visuals. See also Sucker Punch.

I don't know if it's me, but this whole 'write the theme tune, sing the theme tune' approach by directors is a modern thing since the 1st writers strike (along with having a pointless mid series break that seems to plague every tv show).

I think what is a modern thing is the talentless writer-director and yes any changes that affected the slice of the pie going to writers may have contributed to this.

The talented writer-director has been around for decades. James Cameron wrote most of his movies for example.

However I'd also add to it by saying competent writers should write. I think the writing is one of the most important elements of a film or show but lately it seems Hollywood are determined to hire hacks or writers with very little previous experience. I have my own thoughts on why this is happening which I don't want to get into here, but I can definitely say that a lot of the writing quality has taken a huge nose dive in recent years.

Hasn't there been a massive writers' strike in recent years? Must have affected quality of output enormously.

I won't say I watched this today, it was sort of playing in the background.
My take:

In a universe far away, the dastardly baddies in their super star destroyer thing, controlling the doom cannon, wear NATO jumpers.

The goodies should set up another A-team. That's the only place I've seen the main characters survive hundreds of plasma machine guns, while killing whole battalions of baddies with an axe and 3" pen knife.

An utter turd.

I think it's maybe more that there are more writer-producers and director-writers attached to streaming stuff than traditional film. And they're not going to be held to the same standard as a no mark writer or hired hand. It's assumed that they already know what's what or their 'vision' will prevail.

If this script had been submitted by a no one it would've gone straight out the window, the bin would be too good for it. Same goes for a lot of the Disney Star Wars stuff. No amateur would be given the time of day displaying those standards of storytelling.

Back in the days of browsing a video rental shop for the Saturday night move, the missus and I once selected a film called Sub Down. Turned out to be utter, utter, utter, pish of the most gargantuan, colossal, ocean going variety. Since then, when we're considering a film, if someone says "looks like a bit of a Sub Downer", we move swiftly on.

Sadly, Rebel Moon passed the Sub Down test on seeing it available on Netflix, so we watched it. We were wrong. It's a massive Sub Downer.
