My impression was they were doing their best to avoid naming an actual country. The F14s suggest Iran, the 5th gen fighters suggest China. Its easier for everyone to bot actually name a rouge state and leave it unknown
Saw it last night. No spoilers here but it was bloody fantastic. Only 6 of us in the whole Odeon screen for an 8pm viewing though! I thought it would have been packed.

The 'fifth generation fighters' in TG Maverick appear at first glance to be F35 Lightning IIs but are Russian Sukhoi SU-57s -- Russia's answer to the F35, and I believe they've got no more than 15 of the things. Enemy planes in the original film were Soviet MiG-28s. So that's Russia as the enemy in both films then, albeit very subliminally and with no mention of any geographical area or country biggrin

Watch it on the biggest screen you can. Might go and watch it again but in IMAX.

How did they get the Russian aircraft for the film? Or is it all just CGI? I can’t imagine they’d be terribly excited about seeing them shot down by an ageing F14, dramatic licence or no dramatic licence.

I've not seen it yet other than the trailers, but I think it's fair to assume the Su57 and F14 are CGI. Whether that's imagery applied on top of real footage of another type of aircraft doing the flying, or totally fabricated I don't know.

Down in Cornwall atm, just got back from a little boutique cinema in Redruth, only 12 of us in there and allowed beer/wine and hot snacks from the bar, it was great

The token love interest was a bit corny but enjoyed the nostalgia, even brought a tear to the eye on occasion.

Flight scenes were immense!

Thoroughly enjoyed it - solid 9/10

I was smiling from the first scene until the closing credits. It would be easy to pick holes in parts of the film but as a piece of entertainment for someone who almost wore out their taped-from-the-tv copy on VHS as a kid, it was just a joyous experience.

This was exactly how I felt, saw it in a packed IMAX and everyone coming out had huge smiles on their faces.

Parts of the F14 flying looked 100% CGI to me. The physics of it didn't look real.

There are no flying F14s outside of Iran (or even possibly in Iran...). Various parts were filmed using a real aircraft then re-rendered with a CGI of the F14s and bogey aircraft - this was also done for the shot of the Tomcat-on-a-stick:

I mean, its gotta be better than an F5 painted in Soviet colours....

I’m taking my boys to the IMAX screening next week. We haven’t seen the original Top Gun. Is it essential we watch the original prior to watching the new Top Gun?

It’s not Russia as they don’t need to start a secret Uranium enrichment program by building a super secret under ground lab. They got plenty of that stuff just lying around….. wink.

North Korea? But with Russian planes? Or just ‘made up country’.

Agree with everything said about this. Proper old school action movie and the best thing I’ve seen at the cinema for a long time. Easily better than the enjoyable but cheesy original.

I mean I wouldn't openly admit to having never seen it.

I would say it's not required. Whilst it has nice call backs to the first film you won't understand the main film, plot and script standalone on their own.

Even plot points from the first film that are relevant to this one are explained in the film.

All you really need to know is he's called Maverick, because he's a bit of a Maverick.

Still time to watch the first before next week though.

I'd say no as I went with my son (21) who never saw the original yet really enjoyed TG2.

The two main female leads on TopGun 1, Kelly McGillis and Meg Ryan are sadly missing from the film. Hollywood isn’t kind to older actresses….

McGillis character (Charlie Blackmore)isn’t even mentioned in the new film I don’t think, although we do get to find out where Ryan’s character (Carole Bradshaw) is… she’s dead by the way, something like cancer I believe .

Wow, that’s got to be the best action film I’ve watched in the last 10 years, possibly longer.

Absolutely loved it.

Thanks chaps. Unfortunately the original was released when I wasn’t into films and it’s not one that I’ve bookmarked.

Sounds like it’s not critical to watch the first which is convenient as I don’t have the time.

Looking forward to it plus it’s our first visit to an imax screening too!

There's a tremendous cheese shop near my house, and this morning I popped in and was seduced by a large chunk of perfectly ripe Irish Templegall.

But that was not the biggest chunk of cheese in my day today.

Excellent hi-def remake. I did think that the script was not as solid as the first time - don't think there was much in it that will be quoted for generations to come.
