Be difficult to pull it off as you can't lean on the nostalgia as much like they did with Maverick which, IMO, was one of the reasons it was so good.
Still, why not, go for it!
Agreed, there are 36 years between the original and TG Maverick. You can't really lean into the nostalgia if the next film is only a couple of years from now. Mind you good excuse to include Jennifer Connelly again.Still, why not, go for it!

It will end up a bit Fast and Furious if it keeps trying to wedge in Mav racing a jet on bike, piano in bar, beach game, jumping in an F-14 etc.

It'll probably be something like his dad is still alive and needs to be rescued behind enemy lines.
Tom Skerritt still ticking!Maverick and Viper steal an F14 and F4 from a museum to rescue pops. Jester bails them out.
Maverick and a team is sent in to rescue them, after his team is taken out it's only Mav and this one enemy fighter.
Mav does the old roll over giving the guy the finger move at the same time.
They end up shooting each other down and land in the jungle.
After a bit of fisticuffs, the enemy has his helmet removed and turns out to be none other than Mitchell Sr, who is now on the enemy side with a grudge against the US for leaving him out there to rot.
Mav then has some bad luck, this in turns leads to a crisis in confidence until the love of a good women helps him turn things around.
The End.

Saw that. I'm a little unsure. I loved Maverick and I think TC went out of his way to make sure it was good and gave the fans what they wanted.
This just smacks of a studio cashing in.
I mean don't get me wrong I'll be first in the queue when it's released and will no doubt watch it a dozen or so times at the cinema, but I just hope they don't rest on their laurels.
Absolutely this, Maverick was everything the diehard TG fan would want, even down to the F14's appearance, I really hope they don't spoil it for the next one. This just smacks of a studio cashing in.

Now out on Netflix in 4K so gave it a watch.
Only waited until now as I didn't have the home setup to do movies like this justice and now I do.
Very good I thought. You could nitpick a lot of it, and it is far less grounded in reality than the original, but as a proper entertaining action blockbuster it is what we have been waiting for these past few years.

Rooster and Hangman have a mission over Vietnam, they both get taken out by a highly skilled fighter pilot in a dogfight and captured by some militia group.

And then the Mission Impossible theme plays...Maverick and a team is sent in to rescue them, after his team is taken out it's only Mav and this one enemy fighter.

We watched it last weekend. It was good for what it was, although it was a bit silly in places and was full of obvious references to the original.
Unlike the original, though, much of which I remember from seeing It many years ago, as a pastiche, it was ultimately quite forgettable.
So you didnt personally rate it then. Unlike the original, though, much of which I remember from seeing It many years ago, as a pastiche, it was ultimately quite forgettable.

It would have looked/felt better on a huge screen, of course.
