Bridge Over the River Kwai was on yesterday.
Channel 5 were showing various war films yesterday to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the start of WW2.
I thought it was "over" too but its actually "Bridge on the River Kwai". Irrespective, its a great film.
And at the end should have been renamed Bridge In the River Kwai.

Sorry for the spoiler!

What a superb actor Sir Alec Guinness was.
They don’t make them like that anymore.

I've lost count of the number of versions of Apocalypse Now there have been over the years

[ seriously Coppola, stop f***ing around with it, the original cut was best ]

It's probably the best War Movie ever
Agree about it being the best ever war film.

Saw the Redux version at a packed cinema years ago and remember the sense at the end of it, the whole audience were silent and shellshocked.

Incredible film.

Is it though ? Really ?

It kind of meanders about quite a bit, and Brando is pretty much incomprehensible at the end. Mumble mumble straight razor mumble mumble.

Ok bits of it are awesome. But the last hour is a waste.

Give me Sink the Bismarck anytime !

On no I can't have that.
Brando's " pile of little arms " speech is cinematic brilliance.

We honour the poor ox who was killed [ I must admit I can't watch that bit ] during the climatic slaughter ,
the music of The Doors plus the bombing of the village over the end credits is breathtaking.....still.

A few less popular but no less incredible, James Caan in Gardens of Stone. Not an action film but a very provocative war film nonetheless. Galipoli, futility personified. Glory, an incredibly powerful piece also

As the more obvious films have already been listed then:

The 12th Man
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3300980/

Generation War
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1883092/?ref_=nv_sr_1...

Technically not a film but a 3 part mini series, but absolutely fantastic viewing that i watched all in one go

Can I suggest The Two Headed Spy with Jack Hawkins as an allied spy high up in Nazi Germany?

It’s on YouTube and is a great find.

Also The War Lover with Steve McQueen for some impressive flying shots.

Harrison Ford looks as though he's doing the film under duress. Operation Daybreak on straight after.

Generation Kill for a modern version of Band of Brothers.

Grave of the Fireflies. The greatest film you will only see once...

Odette is on BBC2 at the moment. I'd forgotten that Maurice Buckmaster played himself in it. He can't act, but what a legend.

Went through the thread - actually one other vote for Fury and I am adding it to make it three. My all time Brad Pitt Favorite.
Two others to add

Hyena Road
13 Hours - The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi
both modern warfare stories similar fire fight intensity found in Black Hawk Down.
