Odette is on BBC2 at the moment. I'd forgotten that Maurice Buckmaster played himself in it. He can't act, but what a legend.
Yeah, saw it was on too late to post.

It's as harrowing as Carve Her Name With Pride.

Possibly controversial, but The Great Dictator by Charlie Chaplain. Given the subject matter and the time it was made (1940) I think it's an interesting snaphot. Part comedy, part political. Of course, then the public didn't know about the gas chambers in any great detail, etc.

I would second The Great Dictator.

The Battle for Algier.
La Vita e Bella.
Grave of the Fireflies.
Father Goose.

Having a laptop while watching it allows you to compare the real story with the film. Odette seems pretty accurate. No mention of her earlier life in the film. It was the struggles of her early life that gave her the resilience.

Perhaps because the gas chambers didn't exist in 1940.

As the more obvious films have already been listed then:

The 12th Man
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3300980/

Generation War
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1883092/?ref_=nv_sr_1...

Technically not a film but a 3 part mini series, but absolutely fantastic viewing that i watched all in one go
Really enjoyed the 12th man. States it is based on a true story, but if it is totally accurate as portrayed that man is unbelievable and hard as nails.

Triple Cross is excellent. Chase the story of the facts online. The guy was a true rogue and heroic. Whether he was a hero or just an adventurer is debatable, but what a story to tell his grandkids!!!

Indeed. There's a bit of dialogue that I found interesting in it. When a Scots points out to an English, that the english always say 'england' when they mean Britain. It's an aphorism that happens a lot in old films, but not seen acknowledged back then.

Lots of very interesting conjecture around the story and how the real Major Martin may not be Glyndwyr Michael, but an American sailor who drowned in the River Clyde.

We may never know, but our grandchildren may discover the truth. The records are still sealed.

"Cockleshell Heroes" and by luck would have it there is a documentary on BBC4 tonight at 10pm about the mission.

Cheers, I didn't know that fact.
