I watched it earlier today and could have sworn the 'Graf Spee' sailed from Grand Harbour, Valetta looking very American.

My favourite in recent years is Fury with Brad Pitt and Shia Labeouf. And Pitt also stars in the best war film of all time, Inglorious Basterds.
Oh dear! Neither are war films.... just weird fiction.
Oh dear! I think you’ll find almost every film mentioned in this thread were largely fictional, regardless of what the posters might have said. The events may be in chronological order, but everything else is a very loose approximation and in large part, pure fiction and artistic license. That’s the nature of film making.
However, some (a majority of what’s being discussed). are based on real events. Eg Sink the Bismarck or Cockleshell Heroes these a war films.

Other films are action films set during the war and based on nothing other than a story/fiction and then built up around the wars. E g Kelly’s Heroes, Where Eagles Dare and the two you mentioned.

In where Eagles Dare, Clint kills more or the Wehrmacht than died in the whole of WWII ...

Ripping yarns are super fun, but I don’t really see them as war films.

Kajaki has been mentioned already, but I'll say it again. British para regiment trapped in an old Afghanistan minefield .
Not a fan of that one myself. Most of the film is an bunch of maimed men lying around screaming in pain.

Yeah, I sort of agree. The slides rule just moves up and down the fantasy rule with regards to different stories. I like war films and they cross over into many other genres; whether it be alternative history, heist or horror.

Breaker Morant is one of my favourites, the court room room scenes cut with the flashbacks are brilliant. One I've watched several times.

There's a South Korean war film called "71: Into the Fire" that's well worth a watch. Even if you only see the brutal opening scene.

It's based on a real event where 71 South Korean student-soldiers defended a school against a militarily superior North Korean force in 1950. This delaying action was part of the Battle of P'ohang-dong which was instrumental in stopping the North Korean invasion.

Here's the trailer:

I also watched it this afternoon. I almost spat my tea out when Anthony Quayle said he could do with another 8 inch cruiser.

USS Salem was used for the part of Graf Spee-my 81 year old father has always been very pleased that he had been on board whilst it was in Gibraltar whilst he was serving there in the Royal Artillery in 1958-
He was also involved in loading HMS Cumberland (also in the film)with supplies when she was deployed to Aden-the sight of her leaving Gib at full speed left a lasting impression on him.

Doesn’t it ruin Fury though at the end where not one of those SS Grenadiers had a Panzerfaust that would have sliced straight through Brad Pitt’s Sherman tank?

No, but I can imagine watching any film with you would ruin it biggrin

I'm not reading back through the whole thread, but has anyone mentioned Lawrence of Arabia?

Little known campaign, fairly close to Lawrence's account of the events, fantastic score and cinematography and a film good enough to inspire Stephen Spielberg to make films.

Some stand out performances, not least by O'Toole, who (aside from being far too tall) was born to play Lawrence!

The Silent Enemy is a cracking film
About Lionel buster Crabb and his team of navy divers in Gibraltar trying to thwart the Italians efforts to mine the allied ships in Gib.
